  • Relevance and Importance of Discipline in Industry
  • What is Discipline ?
    • A disciplinary procedure is the means by which rules are observed and standards are maintained. It provides a method of dealing with any shortcomings in conduct or performance and can help a person to become effective again. The procedure should be fair, effective and consistently applied.
    • Conformity by the employees to the expectations of management in terms of standards of behaviour and performance, code of conduct and desirable actions and behaviour made known to them through formal or informal, written or verbal means.
  • Why Discipline
    • Clarity of Expectations
    • Uniformity  Consistency  Predictability
    • Stress Reduction
    • Reduction in distraction enabling to focus on core functions
    • Leading to better performance
  • Good disciplinary procedure should :
    • be in writing
    • say who they apply to if there are different rules for different groups
    • be non-discriminatory
    • provide for matters to be dealt with speedily
    • Tell what action might be taken
    • Specify Authority Levels
    • give employees an opportunity to explain
  • Disciplinary Rules are effective when :
    • Employees participation in formulation of rules
    • Psychological acceptance by employees
    • There is agreement on methods of evaluation and determination of deviation
    • Minimum time lag between occurrence of deviation and initiation of corrective mechanism
    • Internal adherence of rules rather than external policing is achieved
