Contrast, values, and tones
1. POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE:“A positive image is a normal image. A negative image is a
total inversion of a positive image, in which light areas appear dark and vice versa.
Positive and negative colors create CONTRAST.
In the boxes below, draw a repeated image in positive and in negative colors.
2. VALUE:“Value or tone is a property of a color, or a dimension of a color space, that
is defined in a way to reflect the subjective brightness perception of a color for
humans along a lightness–darkness axis.”
Fill in the chart below, using the same color all the time, but in 6 different values,
in order from white to black.
2. 3. COLOR THEORY: There are 3primary colors, 3secondary colorswhich are made
from 2 of the three primary colors in equal amounts. Tertiary colors are made
from a primary color and a secondary color.
This means:
Red + Yellow= ________________
Yellow + Blue= ________________
Blue + Red= __________________
4. COMPLEMENTARY COLORS: Theseare pairs of colors that are of “opposite” hue in
some color. The color wheel is a circle that shows relationships between primary
colors, secondary colors, complementary colors, and values.
