1. Constraints
Every project gives you opportunities to create but also constraints to work to. Use this hand out to
consider the constraints which will affect your project.
Constraints
What timescale have you got for this project? How could this impact your work?
The deadline for this project in the 4th of December 2013, this should not be a problem if
everything is kept up to date and up to standard however if for some reason I fall behind then this
could pose a problem and lead to problems and a drop off in quality later on in the project.
Are there any resources you will need for this project that you will not be provided with? How
could this affect your project? What can you do about this?
For this project I might need models for photographing, a location or if I decide to get them from
the internet I will need some stock images. I would need to ask around and perhaps produce some
adverts in order to find the models. This could slow down proceedings with my project if it
becomes difficult to find models or if it isn’t working out.
What constraints are in place regarding your approach to marketing? Do you think this will help
of hinder your project and why?
I will need to ensure that the correct ingredients and nutritional information is displayed on the
packaging to avoid any accusations of misleading the public. My products will also have to be
sensitive to the fact that children will be viewing the things that I create so it will be imperative
that I do not include any profanities within my designs to avoid potentially harmful information
reaching the younger children. I should avoid any over ambiguous imagery in my advertisement so
I do not encourage children to act in a way that is irresponsible or unsafe. This should not affect my
project so I should be ok with my time constraints still.
What restraints could be imposed by an organisation such as the Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA)? How could this impact your project?
One of the things that could be enforced is the fact that I have to use information that is entirely
truthful and is not in any way misleading, this means that I will have to be sure when including any
‘facts’ or quotes to ensure that they are 100% truthful. Another thing is ensuring that the
information is not offensive to the audience in any way so I would have to be careful of the way
that I write my copy and the text that is included within it as if I am trying to create an IRN-BRU
alternative advert it may have some borderline phrases within it which is what they were known
to include in many of their earlier adverts leading to the banning of them.
