Every project gives you opportunities to create but also constraints to work to. Use this hand out to 
consider the constraints which will affect your project. 
Constraints 
What timescale have you got for this project? How could this impact your work? 
The timeline for this project is set at 6 weeks to plan and produce the work entirely. The issue that 
arises with this timescale in a real work environment is mainly from how compacted the time can 
be for the designers, who must devise and follow a strict schedule to ensure no time goes to 
waste. This timescale may also not account for emergency situations where contingency time is 
needed, such as work being lost or corrupted. 
Are there any resources you will need for this project that you will not be provided with? How 
could this affect your project? What can you do about this? 
The resources required for this project include a computer loaded with word processing and 
image manipulation for creation of the can and its associated advertising. Resources that may not 
be included by the employer include existing templates and styles for the drink itself besides a 
brief set of guidelines, whereas it is likely that the company will provide a computer with the 
necessary programs. 
What restraints could be imposed by an organisation such as the Advertising Standards 
Authority (ASA)? How could this impact your project? 
The guidelines set by the ASA include blocking advertising material that could be deemed 
offensive, excessively violent, or depict irresponsible or antisocial behaviour. They also have 
guidelines that prevent misleading information being used in advertising. An investigation into the 
campaign would likely lead to a lot of time being lost, as well as the possibility of having to start 
again from scratch with a campaign that adheres to the rules.To make sure that our advertising 
campaign is not the recipient of complaints and an ASA investigation, we must ensure that our 
content is 100% factual and true, and we must avoid possibly offensive or excessively violent 
content.

Constraints What timescale have you got for this project? How could this impact your work? The timeline for this project is set at 6 weeks to plan and produce the work entirely. The issue that arises with this timescale in a real work environment is mainly from how compacted the time can be for the designers, who must devise and follow a strict schedule to ensure no time goes to waste. This timescale may also not account for emergency situations where contingency time is needed, such as work being lost or corrupted. Are there any resources you will need for this project that you will not be provided with? How could this affect your project? What can you do about this? The resources required for this project include a computer loaded with word processing and image manipulation for creation of the can and its associated advertising. Resources that may not be included by the employer include existing templates and styles for the drink itself besides a brief set of guidelines, whereas it is likely that the company will provide a computer with the necessary programs. What restraints could be imposed by an organisation such as the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)? How could this impact your project? The guidelines set by the ASA include blocking advertising material that could be deemed offensive, excessively violent, or depict irresponsible or antisocial behaviour. They also have guidelines that prevent misleading information being used in advertising. An investigation into the campaign would likely lead to a lot of time being lost, as well as the possibility of having to start again from scratch with a campaign that adheres to the rules.To make sure that our advertising campaign is not the recipient of complaints and an ASA investigation, we must ensure that our content is 100% factual and true, and we must avoid possibly offensive or excessively violent content.
