The Clean India Mission is a national campaign launched by the Indian government in 2014 to clean streets, roads, and infrastructure across 4041 towns in India. The campaign aims to accomplish the vision of a "Clean India" by 2019, the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, at an estimated cost of over 62000 crore (US$9.7 billion). The objectives are to ensure 100% collection and processing of municipal solid waste, generate awareness about sanitation and its links to public health, and eliminate open defecation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated nine public figures to promote the campaign.
