Transportation drives our economy and quality of life (no pun intended).

-ODOT’s priority is to preserve the existing transportation system in good condition and to add capacity to address congestion * encourage economic development.
-Our current transportation system is rated in good condition:
-bridges
-pavements
-spend $64M for preservation projects in FY 2012: minor rehab / resurfacing / bridge rehab
SW Ohio has a transportation advantage with Interstates 71, 75, 74, 275, US 50, SR 32, the OH River, CSX, NS, Cincinnati Airport, Lunken Airport
Accessibility – 4 of the Top 5 Most Accessible Cities in the US are in OH
Congestion is a problem on I-71 & I-75
- With 80% of the region’s freight moving by truck – congested highways negatively impact our regional economy
- Ohio merchandise exports were valued at $50.5 billion in 2013, an increase of 3.9
percent from 2012. By comparison, the United States experienced a 2.1 percent
increase in exports since 2012.
According to this report, in 2013:
Ohio was the 9th largest exporting state.
211 countries and territories received exports from Ohio.
9 countries received over $1 billion in Ohio exports.
45 of the 98 commodity groups recorded exports exceeding $100 million with
11 surpassing $1 billion.
Ohio has started improvements to the I-75 Corridor:
Mitchell & I-75 - $56M adding one lane in each direction
Mill Creek & Thru the Valley projects will improve I-75 from WHV to I-275, $645M
Of course funding is always a challenge for infrastructure projects. ODOT currently has a robust construction program statewide having sold $2.4B last FY and another $2.2B statewide in FY15 but the future doesn’t look as rosy currently with the HTF only being extended until the end of May, 2015.
-Funding is certainly an issue: BSB $2.3B (8 miles of interstate)
-No federal transportation bill – Senate & House versions
-ODOT facing funding cuts from Feds
At ODOT we often talk about results over resources striving to achieve the optimum level of operation to maximize performance. The way we use the resources entrusted to us ultimately leads to the best return on investment for the traveling public.
Planning is key in producing the results / resources that ODOT is striving for.
ODOT coordinates projects with OKI, our MPO for this region, that includes Northern KY and Dearborn County IN. OKI is made up of 7 counties not the same as ODOT District 8. OKI represents ___ local jurisdictions and has ___ board members with a mission to coordinate planning & advance projects that are a regional priority. D8 relies on OKI for the Regional Traffic Model. Further, …. mention how helpful MPO’s and rural DO’s are with TRAC applications for a regional approach.
-TRAC Projects:
OVRDC Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission
RTPO Regional Transportation Planning Organization
-Voice in Future projects
-Prioritize projects on a regional basis – not just by county
The Regional Transportation Planning Organization Program is a great opportunity for local officials to have a voice in how projects are prioritized.
ODOT has many finding partners:
TID’s
OKI
CEAO
