10 Days To Faster Reading: My Fast, Favorite Tips - Presentation Transcript

  1. 10 Days to Faster Reading by Abby Marks Beale My Fast, Favorite Tips by Roxy Allen for the Alt-MBA http://www.alt-mba.com/ http://altmba.ning.com/ 1/18/09
  2. Faster Reading Tips
    • Reading Pacers To keep you from getting distracted and speed up as you read
      • Use a 3x5 white index card to cover what you’ve already read from top of page to bottom
      • Use your fingers:
      • Right / left side pull : point your index finger next to the left or right side, slowly but continually move your finger down the side of the page. As you get more accustomed to this, try moving faster Two-finger pull : use your left index finger on the left of a sentence, your right index finger on the right, to frame the sentence and pull down
      • Snake : Snake your middle index down the page
      • Thumb : Use your thumb at the top or side of the page and go down
  3. Increase Concentration
    • Choose what to read
      • Before you read anything ask yourself, “WHY am I reading this?” and “WHAT might I need this information for?” to determine your PURPOSE and RESPONSIBILITY
      • Purpose: Why am I reading this? To keep up on world affairs, etc.
      • Responsibility: What might I need this information for? A test, a meeting, to sell my prospect, etc. If you can’t come up with a purpose or responsibility, don’t read it!
  4. Top 10 Reading Distracters
    • Other people
    • Telephone
    • Email
    • Faxes
    • Music
    • TV
    • Too comfy

    • Being preoccupied
    • Not reading a right time of day
  5. Keep your focus
    • Squirrel yourself away

    • Move to an appropriate location
    • Turn off the TV
    • Read at your peak time(s)
    • Brain dump
    • Set a time goal
    • Take short breaks
  6. Don’t use a highlighter
    • Write in your margins
    • bracket a paragraph
    • write keywords
    • put abbreviations
    • Ex. 3 reasons why inefficient highlighting postpones learning
  7. Read Only Key Words
    • Ex. Read only the underlined words:
    • The task is defined by a series of steps and elements .
    • Ask Abby: Tips on reading Thought Groups & Key Phrases? *tips on this in podcast interview
  8. How to Pre-View: The Reading Road Map
    • Name of the trip = Title
    • Where the trip begins = Introduction
    • Big cities along the way = Subheads
    • Towns along the way = The first sentence of paragraphs
    • Roadways = Paragraphs
    • Where the trip ends = Summary or concluding paragraphs
    • Are you sure you made it? = Questions at the end
    • 40/60 Rule: These clues give you 40% of the key info. The other 60% of a text is filler. You can choose what portion of the remaining 60% to spend your time on. You may only need another 20% of the filler to spend time on (40% pre-view + 20% actual reading = 60%) and you can save 40% of your reading time.
  9. For more info and training
    • The author’s website features an online speed-reading tutorial called Rev It Up Reading.
    • It's 3 1-hour modules to train you on the techniques presented in the book.
