Question 3 what have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Question3a
1. What we’ve learned from
Audience Feedback?
(Film Trailer)
By Richard Go, Jeremy Atta-owusu, Ryan Pascal and
Sandra Ache
2. Questionnaire and analysis
After conducting the audience research analysing it in the
research and planning stage, we have learnt a lot about our
audiences.
3. Target Audience?
Male
15-18 yr. olds and 22-24 yr. olds
Predominantly Gangster crime genre lovers
Goes to the cinema either often or 1-3 times a month
Haven’t seen a Nollywood style film yet. Though, they’re
interested
Doesn’t just come from a Nigerian background but also, comes
from multiple cultural background
purchases popular magazines such as Empire and Total Film
but only less than 50% actually purchases magazines
Color black is the most popular color to be associated with
Gangster Crime film
4. So what have we learnt?
we were able to define our target audience and so learn
about their demographics
we found out they weren’t as niche as we thought they were
5. So what have we learnt?
we found out that black is the color most associated with
gangster crime films so when it came to the construction of
not only our ancillary task but also our main task, we made
sure that we use the color black to show through color that
the genre is gangster crime
6. So what have we learnt?
Since they go to the cinemas a lot and more than a half
hardly purchase a magazine, the main promotional tool of our
film is surely the film trailer.
7. Audience Feedback on the Trailer
“It looks good. I would like to watch it. I would like to watch the
whole thing.”
“It looks professional. umm… I like it. It doesn’t give the story
away but I know what’s happening… I want to watch the movie.”
8. Audience Feedback on the Trailer
“I got the story. The sound’s good and I really liked how you
edited the sound.”
“I think its really good, it makes me want to know what’s going
on next… I like the music behind it and I can actually get the
storyline from it”
9. Audience Feedback on the Trailer
“I think it was very creative. you use a lot of different clips”
“The opening credits of the logo of institutions should be quicker
because normally in trailers it comes quick and goes. And the
voiceovers it should be louder. but other than that it was really
good”
10. Audience Feedback on the Trailer
“It’s good. It looks African and really good for Nollywood but
in comparison to Hollywood, it’s a lot lower in quality”

watching the
trailer.

their reactions
towards it.

14. Audience Feedback on the Trailer
Here is a screenshot of
our trailer shown in
Facebook where we
were able to gain a
huge amount of likes
from it
15. Audience feedback
Upon hearing and reading the audience feedback, we could
see that our audience really like the Trailer. Many of them
have stated that they would actually watch it after seeing how
good it was. We could also see this from the reaction on their
faces while watching the clip and also, the amount of views
and likes gained by the video in YouTube and Facebook
shows us how effective the trailer was in meeting its aim to
advertise the film towards our target audience.
16. Audience feedback
We also learned that our target audience doesn’t just
involves the male demographic but also, the female gender
group as most of our positive feedback actually came from
this gender group and they actually mentioned that they
would like to watch the movie after seeing the trailer. So
therefore, because of this, we might be able to extend our
market segment, making our trailer less niche.
17. Audience feedback
Some of the feedbacks mentioned to us that the music didn’t have smooth
transitions. I believe that this comment is fair but to be honest, I think that it
didn’t matter if it was obvious we used different music. The Trailer is meant
to show different aspects of the film that would make the audience want to
watch it. The emotions, the luxury and criminal behavior within the gangster
life, and the fact that this movie will involve lots of action and finding out
Daniel’s verdict are one of the main aspects we feel would make people
want to watch the film and we believe the trailer is the perfect promotional
tool that could highlight these aspects. The music helps anchor the meaning
to the audience on what’s currently happening and therefore, help them feel
and understand our trailer and what’s going on within each scene
18. Audience feedback
One of the other critiques our trailer gained was from our audience when he mentioned
that the opening credits of the institution logos should be quicker. We believe that there
isn’t really one side towards argument with this critique. He is right that the logo should
have been quicker as many trailers mostly show the institution logos in a much quicker
pace. But then in a way, we felt that having the logo at a much longer time frame than
what it conventionally does is beneficial for us as this lets our audience remember more
on the type of institution that’s actually distributing this film. The use of Warner Bros. (an
institution that has been known to produce lots of gangster crime films) would help
audience perceive our film as a very good film. A longer time frame given to these
institutions logo allowed us to use the institutions as a sort of brand image which could
help sell our trailer to the market. But then again, maybe decreasing the timeframe just
a little bit could have been better. So if we could have done this film trailer
again, decreasing the time frame of the trailer by just a bit would improve it.
19. Audience feedback
Furthermore, we found out that the film trailer really fits in with the Nollywood
style film. This is really good as this means that our trailer can really conform
towards the conventional Nollywood style film but however, he mentioned
that in comparison to Hollywood, it’s a lot lower in quality. I think that this is
because of the fact that purchasing industry-standard hardware technologies
is expensive and so the lack of industry-standard hardware didn’t make our
trailer conform to the production quality of Hollywood style films.
