UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR
     LEARNING

      Walden University
Recent brain research has shown us that text based information
           systems are not the optimal way to learn.
In fact, just reading text like this, will not meet the need of all
                           our learners.
Universal design for learning combines recent brain research....




                    ......with universal design.
seeing
       The brain
       processes
      information
          by.....


reading,




                    and hearing.
We can embed multiple means of representation into
our teaching, to enable our students to access more of
                    our curriculum.
But this shouldn’t be done as an afterthought.

Universal design for learning has it’s roots in universal design,

Universal design for learning has it’s roots in universal design,
Architects designed buildings but added important features
   afterwards, such as access for people with disabilities.
But it didn’t need to be an afterthought.
Technology can
 help us adapt
 our resources
    for our
students at the
   beginning.
We can also give multiple
pathways for student action.
We can empower
 our students...



                   ...and help them to
                     realize their ideas
We can adapt our outcomes and expectations




                                  and provide
                                    strategic
                                   differences
                                     for our
                                    students
Technology is a multifaceted tool that can help
         us do all of this and more.
We can find tools for our diverse
  student population. Tools that
    translate, differentiate and
transform student understanding.




       We can start today.
