2. Francisco Goya
Goya was born on March
30, 1746 in Fuentedos, a
village near Saragossa,
Spain.
He died on April 15, 1828.
His most famous paintings
are the 14 Black Paintings.
3. The 14 Black Paintings
The theme of the Black Paintings is dark, gory and
horrific.
Goya painted the Black Paintings inside his house after
he recovered from a great illness, which left him deaf.
4. Saturn Devouring His Son
One of the 14 Black Paintings.
Saturn’s hands are dripping
with blood.
His knuckles are white from
gripping so tight.
He has wild hair and his eyes
are wide open showing the
white in them. This makes him
look insane.
The head and arm are gone
from the child.
5. The God Kronos
Francisco Goya’s painting Saturn
Devouring His Son resembles the myth of
the god Kronos.
Kronos was afraid of how his children might
overpower him so each time they were born
he ate them.
His wife saved her last child by disguising
the child with a rock.
The child lived with someone else and
when he reached adulthood he came back
and poisoned his father, which made him
vomit all his children out.
6. When Goya Was Sick
When Francisco Goya was very sick he
had nightmares and vivid hallucinations.
That is how he got the ideas to paint the
dark pictures.
None one ever knew he painted like that
until he died and they went into his house
and found his walls covered with the scary
images.
