Northern Volunteering (SA)
The difference between formal
                  volunteering:
When I give my time freely to an
                  organisation to help the community

And
 Informal volunteering:
 ◦ When I help the next door neighbour
   mow the lawn
 Boring
 No time
 My mates don't
 Nothing of interest
 Too painful
 Can’t do what I want
 Blah blah blah
 About 6 million people Australia wide
    (excluding people on Centrelink benefits)
 About 34% of the population
 Contributing an estimated $200 Billion per
    year of time and effort

Restoring old buildings, railways,
 Develop new interests
 Check out jobs before you make career
    decisions
 CV
 Job skills
 Enjoyment
 Meet new people
 Because you can
 Do something worthwhile
 PLP / SACE – Active Volunteering Certificates
Internet: govolunteer.com.au
 Not for profit organisations:

Sometimes there will be barriers to you doing
  volunteer work e.g.:
 Insurance
 Placements / roles not suitable
 Organisational culture a bit dodgy

The upside far outweighs the downside
 Short term / project / longer term
 Some sort of induction
 Insurance coverage
 Clear expectations
 Someone to report to
 Not to be abused – a good working
    environment
 Reimbursements
 recognition
 Volunteer Resource Centre – we help people
    get into volunteer work
 We support organisations who want to build
    or develop volunteer programs
 Salisbury based
 New referral matching service coming up
    soon
