  • 1. The Power of Facebook – L2 Thursday 6th March 2014 Unit G325: Section B – Critical Perspectives in Media
  • 2. “Lets get Digital” – Monday 14th July 2008 - John Plunkett “The new generation of UK media power players are ditching the traditional gatekeepers and going straight to their audience via the web” (Plunkett - 2008) HISTORICAL CONTEXT
  • 3. “…going straight to their audience via the web” YOU MUST go online and find at least x1 example of a Traditional Media Institution that are now accessing their audience via the web. YOU SHOULD write down any verbal codes/conventions that denote their reasons for changing their methods of gatekeeping.

Aims & Objectives • Re-cap prior learning of key terms/areas covered last lesson. • Introduce Facebook and the idea that platforms are beginning to exist inside this platform. • How advertising and the power of it’s users have created different forms of advertising – e.g “Sponsored stories” • How “Prosumer” driven media is shaping the social and commercial landscape – How are big brands reacting to this? • Review the learning. AO1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of media concepts, contexts and critical debates, using terminology appropriately and with accurate and coherent written expression.
  • 7. YOU MUST fill in the blanks of key ideologies/terms that we covered last lesson. YOU COULD write down other key terms/theory from the booklet you were given last lesson OR contribute your own case study examples to the rest of the class! Re-cap what you already know!

Inside Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg’s $100 Billion Gamble Presenter: Emily Maitland You are going to watch a short extract from the BBC documentary, which was aired shortly after Zuckerberg’s decision to float the Facebook brand on the stock market (May 18th 2012). YOU MUST complete the work sheet you have been given and answer the questions as you watch the extract. YOU COULD be asked to feedback your analysis to the rest of the class.

  • 14. What have you learnt today? YOU MUST write down x3 things you’ve learnt about social media and in particular Facebook. YOU COULD also write down some key theory/terms that you have learnt today in relation to what we are covering at the moment.
  • 15. Facebook – Pro’s & Cons. Based on the video watched today, complete a list of the Pro’s & Cons associated to Facebook. YOU SHOULD upload this onto the Facebook page Due: Wednesday 12th March (Next Section B lesson)
