Editor's Notes
DEED was asked to provide job search and career-focused digital literacy training as part of The Blandin Foundation’s MIRC BTOP project. MIRC Digital Literacy is a series of self-guided basic computer lessons covering: Basic Computer (mouse, keyboard, screen)Basic InternetBasic EmailBasic WindowsBasic Word ProcessingThose familiar with the Northstar Digital Literacy Standards will recognize this list.Screens are very visual with highlights, call-outs, animation and interactivity to guide the learner.
Interactive lessons teach learners basic motor skills like: how to move and click a mouse, and how to type into a text field. They also teach conceptual skills (you can only click one radio button in a series, but you can click ‘all that apply’ in a series of checkboxes. And, the lessons teach the skills within a real world context to introduce learners to existing free tools (MinnesotaWorks.net, Iseek, and DEED’s Creative Job Search and other classes.)
Graphics, interactions and animations are used to teach important parts of the computer and keyboard.Learners are able to identify parts of the keyboard and understand what the special keys are used for.
Video is used to enhance a lesson and demonstrate processes and procedures that are time consuming or difficult to teach on a one-to-one basis. In the keyboarding lesson, video is used to demonstrate proper finger position for learners, identify the home keys, demonstrate how to reach the upper and lower keys, etc.
Scenario-based training is used to teach the lessons from the perspective of “Olivia,” a middle-aged woman who lost her job when the small business she worked for closed. She needed to look for a new job, and had never used a computer. She expresses her feelings of being scared to use a computer, but has now learned to use a computer, and is thinking of taking a college class. This gives learners someone to identify with and work alongside in a safe environment.
The URL: www.mydigitalliteracy.us will take you to a page that can also be printed and used as a checklist for learners. The menu includes links to the lessons and quizzes.Currently: 13 lessons, 2 additional quizzes, 3 resource pages and 4 pages of vocabulary (important ) words
The URL: www.mydigitalliteracy.us contains pages with important words (vocabulary). These pages contain images from the lessons and also a brief description of the term.
The menu also includes documents that learners can use to access more free online resources to help them practice their skills.
Lessons learned from the initial pilot indicated a need to convert this training to other languages.MIRC Digital Literacy Training is being updated to add Somali language translation to be completed in Feb. 2013. Other changes include a menu on the left to help teachers, library and WorkForce Center staff quick link learners to skills that they need.
