2. Abraham’s Proclamation
As all of you should know, Abraham Lincoln was against slavery. This was
part of the reason that the South seceded after he was elected. Although
slavery didn’t really play a huge role in the Civil War, it was still a
contributing factor. Towards the end of the war, Abraham Lincoln wrote a
document called the Emancipation Proclamation. Emancipation means to
free. Proclamation is like an announcement. So what could this mean?
3. What does it mean?
The Emancipation Proclamation is exactly as it’s title suggests. This
“announcement” made it illegal to own another person or a slave. This
proclamation also gave the basic rights to a slave. This proclamation applied
even to the seceded Southern states. Abraham wanted to establish that all
people were equal and that “A house divided within itself cannot stand”.
