American writer (1918-1992), author of westerns and detective story.
He published his first novel, Willow Run in 1943.
Then he wrote for the theater. In 1958, They Came to Cordura (He Came to Cordura)
got him notoriety when this novel was adapted to film the following year under the
same title by Robert Rossen.
Where the Boys Are, published in 1960, it was adapted twice: first by Henry Levin in
1960, and then by Hy Averback, entitled Where the Boys Are '84, in 1984.
In 1975, he published The Shootist Swarthout, a novel that received the Spur Award
for Best Novel of the West in 1975, granted by Western Writers of America. The
novel was adapted into a film by Don Siegel in 1976 under the title The Shootist.
The Homesman, published in 1988, earned the second Spur Award and the Wrangler
Award for best novel of 1988 West.
He also wrote several novels in collaboration with his wife, Kathryn Swarthout.
He died of emphysema in 1992.
