• Human Immunodeficiency Virus
• The virus that causes AIDS
• Discovered in 1983
• Attacks the immune cells (T-Cells)

• Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
• This is HIV with symptoms
– Low immune cell count
– Kaposi Sarcoma
– Tuberculosis
– Other diseases
7. Why is it so lethal?
• Attacks the Immune Cells
• The T-Cells
• As more T-Cells die from the HIV virus, the body
loses the ability to protect itself.
8. What are the Symptoms of HIV?
• Usually 2-4 weeks after exposure
• At first cold/flu symptoms
– Fever
– Swollen glands
– Sore Throat
– Rash
– Fatigue
11. How Do You Get The Disease?
• Bodily Fluids
– Blood (including menstrual blood)
– Semen
– Vaginal Fluid
– Breast Milk
– Saliva and tears (but in such small quantities that that
the virus is not transmitted)

• Sexually Transmitted Disease
– Chlamydia
– Gonorrhea
– Syphilis
• Increase the risk of getting HIV by 6-10 times
• Increased risk by 10-300 times if there is a genital
ulcer
13. Sexual Behavior
• Anal Sex without a condom
• Vaginal Sex without a condom
• Oral Sex without protection
14. Oral Sex
• Not as dangerous as anal or vaginal sex but still
risky.
• Cuts or scrapes in the mouth
• Menstrual blood
• Use a condom, dental dam, or plastic wrap.
• Tonsil and Adenoid tissue a target for HIV

contact (anal, vaginal)
