Editor's Notes
If you don’t know already you need to learn to keep confidential things confidential. You may learn things about people and families that are not public knowledge. You need to practice professional discretion and keep these things to yourself. Do not betray things that are confidential. Ask yourself – is there a professional reason that this person needs to know these things? If the student’s interests are not served, then you need to keep your mouth shut. All PT are to keep personal information about children and schools completely confidential.A breach of confidentiality may result in disciplinary action
Watch your language. Don’t say anything that could be construed as inappropriate. Use formal language. Enunciate clearly. Speak kindly.
Ok here is the deal you have to talk professionally and dress professionally. You have to look more like a teacher than a student. You have to get up early enough to spend time on your hair and other grooming necessities. You have to be clean and you have to smell good. Cover your body. Don’t wear flip flops, halters, midriff tops, baggy pants, too tight of pants, If you wear a cami or a tank top you should wear a jacket of some sort. If you wear jeans they should be tailored jeans. I actually wouldn’t wear jeans of any sort unless the teachers and especially your clinical factory wears them. It wouldn’t hurt to have the conversation with your CF before wearing jeans. The thing is, you are representing western and more importantly you are representing yourself as an emerging professional. I don’t want to make you paranoid but all the school staff watches what the practice teacher wears. There is a high standard. Can’t you just hear them now, “Well in my day, we wouldn’t have been allowed to wear that.” If you have the least doubt that what you are planning to wear is not appropriate do me a favor and do yourself a favor and don’t wear it. What if you wore something and they asked you to go home and change? Such a little thing could mess up your career. Don’t take the chance.
