see and hear
We try to imitate the masculine presentation

Women Leaders and Public Speaking: Another Double-Bind?

Editor's Notes

  4. What is the problem, indeed? When did it start? A very long time ago…

  7. AFP shot from latest Davos economic forum this January 2013. A bankers panel. At conference after conference, in today's world, women are underrepresented as speakers. The World Economic Forum has a 20 percent quota for participation by women, which it has yet to meet, and Social Media Week, with events in 18 countries, has set the bar at 50 percent women speakers and participants for its events by the end of 2014.. The TED conference has achieved as high as 42 percent women on the program, but more often comes in at less than that. The German Marshall Fund ’ s Brussels conference recently offered child care to get rid of one possible barrier to women ’ s participation. And even the New Yorker magazine highlighted the problem in a cartoon that showed an all-male panel, with the moderator saying "The subject of tonight's discussion is ‘ why are there no women on this panel?" Guide des experts.

  9. Should we reproduce the stereotypes we find in the media? Isn ’ t there another way?
  10. Standard psychological definitions fail to do justice to the alpha male. He dominates history; his brilliance and charisma lay the foundations for every city and every civilization. He is self-made, self-serving, self-glorifying, and -- often -- self-destructive. You’re either with him or against him, he doesn’t compromise on the issues at hand, and if you turn out to be on the opposing team, he will break you before even considering your surrender. A short list of those traits associated with him make for a vicious, combustible brew: High intelligence, unwavering confidence, arrogance, amazing leadership capacities, a results-driven mindset, a instinct for self-promotion, extreme charisma, and above all, fearlessness in a fight. 11. Male communication habits revolve around taking up space. Not giving in. Standing feet apart, sitting legs open. Chest open or puffed out. Energy forward, probing. Head held high. Choosing to look or not look without apology. Breathing slowly and deeply into the body. Speaking when they want to and not rushing. Driving the voice. Often being too pushy without apology. Not falling off a line, but sustaining an idea. Speaking about what they want to talk about and not being distracted or feeling the necessity to change subject matter if asked. Listening without supporting another speaker. Not withdrawing when challenged or interrupted, in fact just getting louder to drown out any interference. Clear, sure and uncompromising language. Words without room for debate.
  12. A traduire Stanford experiment by Franck Flynn . Specifically, with Harvard's permission, I changed the original materials so that one section of the class received a version of the case called "Howard" Roizen (same case, just different pronouns) and the other section received the original case. Before class, I had the students go online and rate their impressions of "Roizen" on several dimensions. As you might expect, the results show that students were much harsher on Heidi than on Howard across the board. Although they think she's just as competent and effective as Howard, they don't like her, they wouldn't hire her, and they wouldn't want to work with her. As gender researchers would predict, this seems to be driven by how much they disliked Heidi's aggressive personality. The more assertive they thought Heidi was, the more harshly they judged her (but the same was not true for those who rated Howard).

Perfectionism. I am to blame because I do not have enough of the relevant knowledge, qualifications, experience and credentials that are necessary, so I had better not apply… Lack of risk taking and opportunities. There are bound to be candidates better than me. I don’t want to be laughed at, so just in case I fail, I am going to stay safe in my comfort zone. Fear of rejection. I do not want to be rejected, laughed at for applying for a job that I obviously cannot do. It really is my fault. I must just work harder, get more credentials, knowledge, qulifications, experience, etc…

  18. Female role models eliminated the gender gap, though. Women gave longer speeches and evaluated themselves more positively when they were primed with with images Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel than when they saw Bill Clinton or weren't primed at all. The outside observers also rated their speeches higher. "Female political role models can inspire women and help them cope with stressful situations that they encounter in their careers, such as public speaking," the authors write. "A lack of female powerful role models leads to a vicious circle, because if women fail to take leadership positions, they also fail to provide role models for junior women to follow."
  19. A new paper in the May issue of the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology suggests that even just seeing images of female role models can help women speak publicly and perform as leaders. Previous research has found that the presence of female leaders in government has a significant effect on girls' educational goals, and seeing other women in STEM careers can help women want to pursue those careers themselves. However, other studies have found that seeing high-level female leaders can actually make women feel inferior about their own leadership qualities. To dig deeper, scientists asked 149 students from a Swiss university (81 women, 68 men) to give a persuasive political speech against increasing student fees, within the context of a virtual reality program that put them in front of an audience of six men and six women. For some participants, the back wall of the virtual room featured a hanging picture of Hillary Clinton. For others, it showed a portrait of Bill Clinton or Angela Merkel, and for some the wall remained blank. The researchers timed and videotaped the speech, then asked the students to evaluate their performance. A separate group of people unaware of the experimental conditions watched the speeches and rated them based on fluency and body language. Both the people watching the speeches and those giving them perceived longer speeches as being more positive. When there was no role model in view, men spoke longer than women. The same held true for speaking under the withering gaze of Big Bill. "A lack of female powerful role models leads to a vicious circle, because if women fail to take leadership positions, they also fail to provide role models for junior women to follow." They go on to recommend that "active steps should be taken in order to increase the number of women in leadership positions, which would consequently increase their visibility and empower other women on their path to leadership."

Head tilting, a particularly feminine gesture, can be a very positive cue, but is also subconsciously processed as submission signals. Project authority by keeping your head straight up in a more neutral position + Physically condense. 27. Adding tag lines to our sentences Examples of these are: “This is a great angle, don’t you think?” and “Our department is doing well, isn’t it?” A tag line at the end of a sentence weakens the statement being made as well as the authority of the speaker. It communicates that the speaker is not completely confident so must ask for reassurance.
  28. For women, in particular, the pitch of their voices may rise when they are nervous, making them sound girlish. Whatever their age, that detracts from their credibility and sense of authority. Modulate your voice.  When we’re nervous, we speak more quickly — something that comes across both on the phone and in person. Purposely slow down. Any hesitation can make you sound unsure of yourself, but a deliberate pause can emphasize a key point.

  30. Waiting your turn. In negotiations, men talk more than women and interrupt more frequently. When asked what advice she had for professional women, former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the first woman to assume that role, replied, “ Learn to interrupt ” women remain silent during meetings. women tend to allow men to interrupt them. Men, in general, jump in with their ideas, assert what they think and therefore interrupt more than women. In response to this male communication pattern, women frequently allow themselves to be cut off and their ideas to be silenced or even usurped by their male counterparts. We suggest that women calmly hold their ground when they are interrupted by saying something like, “ To continue my point… ” or “ Just a minute, I ’ d like to finish my point. ” Women frequently wait be called on or have difficulty taking the floor. It is crucial to speak up at least once during every business meeting, even if you are simply agreeing with a point being made, or summarizing what has been said. Not saying anything can be interpreted as a lack of knowledge or ability. Speak up to ensure that your strengths and knowledge are accurately perceived. Submission sign. This is not new. Psychologists have known this for decades, and before that, when we used our intuition and instincts far more often than we do now, we always knew it. It ’ s also true in business (just as it is for dogs!). 1000′s of years ago, for a woman, or a man for that matter, to tilt their head to one side leaves the neck vulnerable to attack from predators. You would not be tilting your head in an appealing manner if you were face to face with a lion. However, you might do so if you felt safe and secure in the company you were in – e.g. for a wife, your hunter husband. Roll forward a few millennia. The sames rules still apply. And, it ’ s the same in a business scenario. If you are in the company of someone you like and trust, you might instinctively tilt your head to one side as you are listening to them. You would also have good eye contact.

  42. As Sandberg mentioned in her book, our research shows that people can change their own hormone levels and behaviors, by "faking it" — by "power posing," or adopting expansive, open nonverbal postures that are strongly associated with power and dominance across the animal kingdom (imagine standing with hands on hips and feet spread, like Wonder Woman). By holding these postures for just two minutes before entering a high-stress situation, people (both men and women) can increase their testosterone by about 20% and decrease their cortisol by about 25% (Want to do the opposite to your hormones? Adopt a low-power pose — wrap your arms around your torso, cross your ankles, lower your chin). Power posing also increases people's tolerance for risk and pain, and their ability to think abstractly. This isn't about what your body language is communicating to others; it's about what your body language is communicating to you: your body language is changing your mind, which changes your behavior, which changes your outcomes..

Breathe down to your core, feeling the cool air pour in, warm up inside your core, and then flow out, warming the inside of your mouth. You should feel your belly "fill" with the breath action, and then, as the air flows out, you should feel your gut collapse toward your spine. If the breath was fogging the ceiling, you might imagine that the sound is painting it. Pick a rich, deep colour to imagine, and associate it with the sound you're painting on the ceiling.

  49. Of course, I teach in my course that you can only really get three key messages across memorably. This talk was longer than most, and hopefully more memorable than most, but what were the three key takeaways?
  50. Here they are. If you only remember three things from this talk, remember these. 1. Most presentations suck. This is key. If you don ’ t remember the problem, it ’ s hard to remember the solution to it. Most presentations are boring and ineffective. 2. There is a better way: Presentation 2.0. Remembering that there is a better way is key - and when you remember that you should be doing 2.0 presentations and not the boring old 1.0 ones, then you ’ ll also start to remember some of the ingredients of a great presentation, and you ’ ll be tempted to look back at these notes as you prepare your next presentation. 3. It ’ s a great investment in yourself. Like it or not, people judge you on how well (or how poorly) you communicate, so if you can learn to present better than 95% of your peers, you ’ ll get a reputation as a great communicator, and that will likely help your results, your influence, and most likely, your rise up the career ladder. Remembering this is key because it will inspire you to keep learning, practising and improving, and those are necessary if you want to be a great presenter. So if you remember simply these three things, the others will naturally follow.
