2. History OF THE TRIKITIXA
● It began to spread throughout the Basque Country in the late 19th century. In
1889 we have the first written mention of a pilgrimage from Urkiola.
● In the Basque Country, according to the belief of many, this instrument has
its process of extension from Bizkaia to Gipuzkoa.
● The trikitixa was despised and frowned upon in society: Catholic priests saw it
as "the fuel of hell", because it encouraged people to dance together and the
Church prohibited these dances.

● People have been aware of the change or evolution of trikitixa until
today.Trikitixa has evolved with people in the form, styles, and influences.
● Many people continue to live from the trikitixa (teaching, selling, playing,
organizing, ...).It is an element in musical training. Many who have no
interest in music theory learn trikitixa.
● We can say that the traditional trend of trikitixa is part of the cultural
heritage. If it is not transformed it is not maintained, and if it is not
maintained, it dies.

● It is a diatonic button accordion, of Italian origin
● It is a musical instrument that is played in the pilgrimages of the Basque
Country.
● The Church, the City Council and the Government were united in a war
against the trikitixa,prohibiting the use of the instrument even catching
dancers who danced their music and musicians who played it.
● 1889 Juan Carlos Guerra, in the pilgrimage of Urkiola called this
instrument "a diatonic accordion".
