ARTHROPOD WORKSHEET
1. What does arthropods mean?
It means that they have jointed appendages
2. In what kingdom are arthropods found?
Kingdom Animalia
3. Are they vertebrates or invertebrate? Why?
They are invertebrates because don´t have backbone
4. List 3 characteristics of all arthropods
a) They have a hard exoskeleton made of chitin
b) Their body is divided into segments.
c) They have jointed appendages such as mouthparts, antenna and legs
5. Name 3 main arthropod groups:
a) Insects
b) Arachnids
c) Crustaceans
INSECTS
1. Name the 3 body segments of insects:
a) Head; b) Thorax; c) Abdomen
2. How many legs do insects have and which body segment are they attached to?
They have three sets of legs (six in total) attached to to the thorax
3. How many antennae do insects have and where are they located?
They have one pair of sensory antenna located on the head
4. Name the insect´s jaws and explain their movement
They´re called mandibles and open from side to side to chew food.
5. Do all insects have wings? Explain your answer
Some of them don´t have wings, e.g. Fleas, termites, ants (workers). Probably, they lost their
wings as a type of evolutionary adaptation to the environment.
INSECTS (II)
1. What is metamorphosis? Name the two types
Metamorphosis is a biological process by which many insects undergo (=sufrir) dramatic physical
changes in several (=varias) stages (=etapas)
2. Name the complete metamorphosis stages
Egg---larva---pupa---adult
3. Name the incomplete metamorphosis stages
Egg---nymph---adult
4. Why is the larva called the feeding stage? What is larva called?
The larva is also called caterpillar. This stage eats lots of vegetation storing food energy for the
next energy
5. What is another name for cocoon and what is its function?
The cocoon, also known as (=AKA) chrysalis, is a structure in which the pupa develops into an
adult insect.
