2. What is the Spinning Jenny?
The Spinning Jenny was invented in 1764 in Europe. The Spinning
Jenny used 8 spindles instead of 1, like the Spinning Wheel. A single
wheel on the spinning jenny controlled 8 spindles which created a
weave using 8 threads spun from a corresponding set of rovings. Later
on, models had up to 120 spindels.
3. The Creator
James Hargreaves was a British carpenter and weaver. He was the one who
invented the Spinning Jenny. James was born in Oswaldtwistle,
England in 1720. He was never taught how to read and write. Legends
say that Hargreaves’s daughter, Jenny, knocked over a spinning wheel
and as he watched the spindle roll across the floor the idea of the
Spinning Jenny came to him. It’s a legend so its not for sure.
4. Improving Industrial Revolution Life
The purpose of the Spinning Jenny was to fix the problem there was
with the increased speed of weaving. The problem was that it now took 3
spinners to keep up with one weaver. But the Spinning Jenny resolved
the problem. The spinning Jenny also decreased the need for labor. The
labor saving invention threatened workers. They could lose their jobs. In
1768 a group of spinners broke into Hargreaves’s house and destroyed
his spinning jenny machines fearing that the machines would make
work slow for them or maybe even make them lose their jobs.
5. From Spinning Jenny to..
Spinning Mill
Richard Arkwright later invented the a way to drive the machine by water
power. Arkwright brought workers and waterpower together and opened a spinning
mill during the 1780s, in Europe . The Spinning Mill could produce stronger threads
for yarn.
6. Importance of Today
The Spinning Jenny is not really used today
but it is important. It plays a huge roll in our
history and has helped us develop new and more
modern,advanced, and effective factory
machinery.
