2. What You’ll Need To Know
In this Unit your child will be learning about
states of matter. They will learn why matter is
important, how it affects our environment, and
the different types of matter. This unit will last
one week.
3. Objectives
By the end of the unit, your child will be able to
identify liquids, solids, and gases. They will
know why the three types of matter are
important to our world and how it affects us and
our surroundings.
4. Curriculum Framing Questions
Essential Question: What is the universe made of?
Unit Questions: How does matter affect our environment?
How do the different types of matter make up our
environment?
Content Questions: What are the characteristics of a
solid?
What are the characteristics of a liquid?
5. What Your Child Will Be Doing.
In this unit our class will be studying how liquid effects its
surroundings. Students will be given solo cups one holding
coke, one water, one vinegar, and one soap. The student
will place a marshmallow in each cup and will study how
the marshmallow is affected by the different form of liquid
each day. They will place their findings on a chart, so they
can see how the marshmallow progresses. At the end of
the week, the students will have enough material to make a
powerpoint to share with the class of their findings.
6. We Need You!
For this assignment please send the following
items to school with your child:
● 4 solo cups
● marshmallows
● a can of coke
● small bottle of vinegar
These items will be used for the week long
project.
7. Additional Information
Ms. Clements and I will be taking photos of the
class and their projects all week. We will be
adding these to the class website, so make
sure you check back at the end of the week
and see your child in action!
