- My name is Ronen Siman Tov and I am managing the IBM innovation Center in Israel and part of the GTU (Global Technology Unit) The GTU is a unique division in IBM Israel that promotes business initiatives with Israeli Hi-Tech companies whose innovative solutions incorporate IBM products and services, thus ensuring a strong value proposition for both IBM and the partner in joint sales initiatives worldwide. In this presentation I will try to explain how Watson, IBM’s cognitive super computer is transforming the Healthcare industry
- Watson is well remembered by winning the Jeopardy trivia game while competing with world champions In this match the competitors were given an answer and were requested to quickly identify what was the question. During the match, Watson was able to demonstrate its capabilities to understand Natural Language, Analyze Big Data and extract insights by applying evidence based reasoning Winning the game was just the beginning, and since then Watson was improved to target real world challenges like improving the healthcare program
- Why Watson for Healthcare Because there is a lot to be done to improve The results are horrifying - 1 in 5 patients are misdiagnosed Costs are very high It is a known fact that focusing on prevention and wellness pays off by identifying symptoms in early stages
- So what is the challenge in Healthcare? The challenge is how to deal with information overload, how to extract insights and bring value to the patient Until recently data coming from the social network, behavioral, socio-economic and environmental data was not taken into account as part of the decision making We are taking about enormous data sources which could bring value but are not part of the picture yet With Watson, IBM addressed this challenge by putting in place a platform to help collect, manage, analyze data and extract insights by applying Big Data and Machine Learning technologies
- Delivering real value to the patient could only be done by putting an extreme focus on the patient and extracting personalized insights Watson knows how to ingest published knowledge and personalized patient’s data spanning clinical and social domains Watson does evidence based reasoning by using evidence coming from the personalized patient data and building hypothesis based on the healthcare documentation
- As a decision support system Watson combines knowledge driven methods and data driven methods bridging between population averages and the insights coming the individual patient This way Watson can suggests an hypothesis with confidence measurement which is backed up by personalized measurements and insights
- Watson Healthcare focus is to optimize the intersection between R&D productivity, outcomes and engagement. R&D productivity is all about applying new research techniques to Uncover hidden patterns in the data (with the Discovery Advisor) Take into consideration genomic analysis (to understand the biochemical considerations of a tissue with Genomics Advisor) And Match the right patients for clinical trials (with Clinical Trial Matching) Improve individual outcomes by Identifying individualized treatment plans and clinical trials (Oncology Advisor) Providing easy-to-consume patient case summaries, focusing on critical attributes of the patient (EMR Advisor) And Better training (Clinical Reasoning / Paths) Improve engagement is all about empowering the CRM or sales representative with: Deep knowledge and question and answer capabilities to resolve issues on the first call
- In order to promote innovation around Healthcare Watson launched IBM Watson Health Cloud, an HIPAA compliant standard based, and massively scalable platform for Healthcare solutions Where Watson provides the cognitive services, and IBM Partners can load their corpus data and build solutions by utilizing Watson APIs
- As part of the GTU mission to promote cooperation between Israeli Hi Tech community and IBM, IBM AlphaZone Accelerator was launched last year. AlphaZone is the first and only IBM Accelerator WW, focusing on Post Seed & Round A funded companies, We run two semesters a year (24 weeks program each) and we help startups to build leading solutions for the enterprise market powered by IBM technologies. The idea is to form a long term technology and business partnership between these startups and IBM worldwide.
