1. Interpretive Sign Designs Goals: I want readers to be aware that online classes and degree programs are becoming increasingly important in higher education. Audience: Students, faculty, and staff of colleges and universities. Message: Online classes are available right now from many institutions because they offer benefits to the school as well as to the students.

3. My first design: My first design was okay, but I wanted it to pop a little more. I was also afraid my original graphic wasn’t very descriptive of the non-traditional student population that benefits so much from the ability to take classes online.

5. The next designs: I chose a different color (green) for the next designs and I used a graphic of a single person of indescriminate age (the gender was just based on the availability of the graphic). I wasn’t very satisfied with my layout and I worried that it was too boring. Plus, the lack of contrast made my white font hard to read.

7. Big changes: I changed the graphics, the layout, then the color… and it was too much. The warmer orange and new elements didn’t do anything for my design. I accomplished very little with each additional change and ended up with a design I didn’t like that distracted from my message and the original goal of modern simplicity.

9. So I … …went back to the repeating green. I played with my graphics again and it started looking like like what I’d had in mind. After a few final tweaks, the next slide was my end result.
