Mental Attitude: ADHD Linked to Higher Eating Disorder Risk. According to a new study, children with attention-
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have an increased risk for an eating disorder called loss of control eating syndrome (LOC-ES).
Researchers say the people with this disorder sometimes can’t stop eating, even if they want to. In the study, they found that children
with ADHD were twelve times more likely to have LOC-ES than children without ADHD. The lead author believes that children with
both ADHD and LOC-ES may have a severe form of ADHD marked by more impulsive behavior that affects their eating habits.

Health Alert: Calling 911 is the Best Option for Heart Attack Victims in Rural Areas. Rural residents have a better chance of
surviving a heart attack if they call 911 than if they attempt to drive to the hospital on their own or with the help of a loved one. A new
study found that 52% of rural residents arrived at the hospital in their own vehicles, rather than in an ambulance. However, those who
waited for an ambulance still arrived at the hospital in two-thirds the time and because emergency medical services (EMS) personnel
were able to assess them while en route, they also received treatment more quickly when they arrived. Study author Dr. John
Gallagher notes, "The biggest implication is raising awareness so the public understands the vital role of EMS in healthcare… Their
unique capabilities to deliver lifesaving care en route to the hospital should not be underestimated."

Diet: Replacing Soda with Water Reduces Diabetes Risk. If you want to decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes,
researchers suggest replacing soft drinks or sweetened milk beverages with water, unsweetened tea, or coffee. Researchers found that
for every 5% increase in daily energy intake from sugar-sweetened drinks, an individual's risk for developing type 2 diabetes increases
up to 18%. Additionally, they found that drinking water or unsweetened tea or coffee instead of a daily serving of soda reduced
diabetes risk by 14% and replacing a daily serving of sweetened milk reduced the risk by 20-25%. The authors conclude, "In light of
the consistency of past evidence, together with the new evidence generated by this work, it is now timely and appropriate to consider
population-based interventions to reduce [sugar-sweetened beverage] consumption and increase the consumption of suitable
alternative beverages." Dialectologies, May 2015
Exercise: Physical Fitness Reduces Osteoporosis Risk. The Erlangen Fitness and Osteoporosis Prevention Study followed 137 early
post-menopausal women for 16 years. Participants were either asked to join a twice-weekly group exercise class or serve as controls
by maintaining their usual level of fitness. At the conclusion of the study, researchers found that those who exercised in a group
setting were half as likely to have sustained a bone fracture in the intervening 16 years when compared with participants in the control
group. Osteoporosis International, May 2015
Chiropractic: TMD Patients May Benefit from Cervical Care. For patients with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), a visit to
the chiropractor may yield benefits. Researchers examined the cervical function of 37 TMD patients and 20 healthy controls and found
that those with TMD exhibited impaired cervical range of motion. Moreover, those with both TMD and headaches tended to have
even greater difficulty rotating, flexing, or extending their necks. Cranio, May 2015
Wellness/Prevention: Prevention is Key for Seniors. Preventive care can help detect health problems early when they are easier to
treat and help older adults maintain their good health and independence. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends
that seniors have regular screening for colorectal cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and abnormal cholesterol levels. For women, breast
cancer screening should be performed every two years. American Academy of Family Physicians, May 2015
