Cell division must follow the exact steps of mitosis or it can lead to cancer. Cancer cells lose the ability to control their growth and divide uncontrollably, forming tumors that damage surrounding tissues. Cancer cells are able to divide without control by slowing or speeding up the cell cycle and bypassing checkpoints during interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis. The most common type of skin cancer, melanoma, is caused by DNA damage from UV radiation that causes mutations allowing skin cells to form tumors.

3. Cancer Cells are Immortal
• Cancer is a disorder in which some of the body’s
own cells lose the ability to control growth
– Lose control
– Cancer does not care about what anything else the
cell is doing
– Cancer cells divide uncontrollably and form masses of
cells called tumors
• These damage the surrounding tissues, takes over its
neighbors
