    • THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER Water is essential to Life. At work or at play, water is the key to all bodily functions. Everyday, our body must replace 2½ liters of water. You can only survive 7-10 days without water. Without water, there is no Life. Water is getting harder to find, WHY? Because even though man cannot create water, he keeps creating POLLUTANTS.

Clean up the nagging problem of toxic waste left by American soldiers in their former military base at Subic Bay and Clark Field. … “There have been more than 80 deaths resulting from drinking contaminated water at Clark,” once said American environmentalist Allen Hubbard, a licensed geologist . . . . . .Environmentalists also stressed that toxic chemicals in the water that the people drink or in the air they breathe have caused leukemia and mental retardation.
    • Rockwell Power Plant’s Deadly Secret (August 2001) A PCIJ Report by Vinia Datinguinoo Our latest report documents how toxic chemicals produced by the Rockwell power plant in Makati City were stored in a concrete capsule in Barangay San Joaquin, Pasig City. The cancer-causing chemical, called PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) were kept at a small Meralco compound in Pasig, posing health and environmental hazards to local residents, who were not told of the dangers they face. When released into the environment, PCBs do not biodegrade. From the soil, they can go up the food chain to affect animals and people. PCBs can cause cancer through frequent skin contact, ingestion through the food chain, or inhalation of dust coated with the chemical. It is one of the few toxic substances that can poison babies through their mothers' breastmilk.
    • Global Data on Water (WH health statistics) O Every 8 seconds, a child dies from a water related disease. 30%of deaths in Asia are caused by waterborne diseases. Contaminated water is the source of 80%of all diseases in the 3rd World. How come ? 70% of our body is WATER ! 26
    • How about CHLORINATION ? - Maynilad, MWSI or other water districts In the Nov. 13, 2003 issue of the People’s Tonight, referring to the Tondo outbreak, the Health Secretary said “If it smells like chlorine, it’s safe”. 27
    • Chlorinated Water in our taps.  Chlorine in tap water is 1 of the 87 deadly contaminants.  Chlorine kills bad bacteria, and guardian/good bacteria.  Chlorination > TTHM > colon and rectal cancer.
    • DANGERS OF CHLORINATION (from the book HEALTHY WATER, by: MARTIN FOX, Ph.D.) • Nothing can negate the incontrovertible fact that the basic cause of atherosclerosis and resulting entities such as HEART ATTACKS and the most common form of STROKES is CHLORINE. By: Joseph Price, M.D. • The origin of heart disease is akin to the origin of cancer. CHLORINATION could very well be a key factor linking these 2 major diseases. By: Dr. Richard Passwater (from the Journal of the NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE - St. Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press, 12/17/87) • Long-term drinking of CHLORINATED WATER appears to increase a person’s risk of 80%. developing bladder cancer by as much as
    • What about Water Refilling Stations ? A A
    • To be able to sell their water, a Commercial Water Refilling Station is required to pass some kind of test (monthly) from an accredited DOH Lab – showing effective reduction of contaminant(s). We have previously discussed that US-EPA lists about 87 deadly contaminants in water. Do you know how many of the 87 contaminants are being tested for effective reduction, on a monthly basis ?
    • BOTTLED Water ? How about Is this healthy water ? • Bottled Water are simply processed water using Distillation, RO - reverse osmosis, De-Ionization or Filtration – you can do this on your own and save money. • Also, you should check what TREATMENT PROCESS(ES) WERE USED TO PURIFY THE WATER - NOT ALL TECHNOLOGIES ARE THE SAME. 32

    • DRINKING WATER CONTAMINATION is a in CRITICAL and REAL PROBLEM our Community. Our organization should help address this problem by being PROACTIVE ADVOCATES for Safe & Healthy Drinking Water.
    • How to be a ProActive Advocate. • BE INFORMED Safe & Healthy DRINKING WATER. • KNOW HOW TO CHOOSE THE MOST EFFECTIVE TECHNOLOGY • TELL OTHERS ABOUT IT.
    • Industry Standards, Global Certifications and 3rd Party Independent Authorities NSF International – the largest 3rd party certifier of DWTUs Underwriters Laboratories – the largest 3rd party certifier of household appliances Required Action: Effectively reduction of the widest range of contaminants of health concern (see Performance Data Sheet)
    • Summary:  Poor Quality Drinking Water from taps  Too much chlorine – “amoy at lasa”  Century-Old Distribution System – one of the first to be installed in Asia  Insufficient Water Supply – enterprising individuals sell water – from where?  Drinking Poor Quality Water can lead to death – Tondo outbreak; 7 de aths 760 hospitalized (acute)  Chemical contaminants can ultimately lead to death – 80 de aths at Clark & Subic, etc. (chronic)
    • Criteria for Safe & Healthy Drinking Water: • Free from S - M - C • Contains the NATURAL MINERALS in water - natural minerals - calcium & magnesium - makes the water “HARD” - reduces heart disease & cancer mortality • Slightly Alkaline (pH range of 7.3 - 7.4) - blood has a slightly alkaline pH; other water treatment technologies (Distillation, RO, Ion Exchange) produce acidic water - drinking acidic water disturbs the function of internal organs. – DISEASES AND CANCER CELLS THRIVE IN AN ACIDIC ENVIRONMENT.
    • What doctors say about the Safe & Healthy Drinking Water: Several studies also link chlorine and chlorinated by- products to a greater incidence of bladder, breast and bowel cancer as well as malignant melanoma. – Dr. Zoltan P. Rona, noted expert on drinking water Drink Hard Water with Alkaline pH to reduce the risk of cancer mortality. – Dr. Martin Fox, author of “Healthy Water”
