2009: Deep Solar Minimum A 50-year low in solar wind pressure : Measurements by the Ulysses spacecraft reveal a 20% drop in solar wind pressure since the mid-1990s and the lowest point since such measurements began in the 1960s. The solar wind helps keep galactic cosmic rays out of the inner solar system. Weaker solar wind means fewer geomagnetic storms and auroras on Earth With the solar wind flagging, more cosmic rays are permitted to enter, resulting in increased health hazards for astronauts.

2009: Deep Solar Minimum A 12-year low in solar irradiance : Careful measurements by several NASA spacecraft show that the sun's brightness has dropped by 0.02% at visible wavelengths and 6% at extreme UV wavelengths since the solar minimum of 1996. The changes so far are not enough to reverse the course of global warming, but there are some other significant side-effects: Earth's upper atmosphere is heated less by the sun and it is therefore less puffed up. Satellites in low Earth orbit experience less atmospheric drag, extending their operational lifetimes.

2009: Deep Solar Minimum We're experiencing a very deep solar minimum , says NASA solar physicist Dean Pesnell This is the quietest sun we've seen in almost a century , agrees NASA sunspot expert David Hathaway. Modern technology cannot, however, predict solar cycle. Competing models by dozens of top solar physicists disagree, sometimes sharply, on when this solar minimum will end and how big the next solar maximum will be. Galactic Alignment - 1980 - 2016 Milky Way is a spiral galaxy that one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe. Galactic Center Black Hole Massive black hole at the center of our galaxy 3.7-4.1 million times the density of our Sun, confirmed in a 16 year 2008 report. The galactic center is about 26,000 light-years from Earth, meaning we see events as they occurred 26,000 years ago. And a new study suggests all that mass, confined to an area about 10 times smaller than Earth's orbit around the Sun, spins around about once every 11 minutes. The Sun, for comparison, takes about a month to make a revolution on its axis. Earth spins once every 24 hours. Black holes may be a feature at the center of galaxies.

Alignment with the Plane of the Galactic Center Black Hole - 1980-2016 It is an astronomical fact that the precession of the equinoxes (the slow wobble of the earth on its axis over a 25,800-year cycle) changes our orientation to the stars, constellations, and other celestial background features. Importantly, precession alters our angular orientation to the galactic plane of our Milky Way, such that the sun’s sidereal positions on the equinoxes or solstices periodically align with the Milky Way. The solstice sun will be in alignment with the galactic plane in the years between 1980 and 2016.

We can call this zone a solstice-galaxy alignment, or simply, galactic alignment. This alignment occurs roughly once every 12,800 years (one-half of a precession cycle).
