2. Cause/Risk Factors
• Caused by an extra chromosome
• Created at conception
• Chance of carrying a baby with down
syndrome grows with age
• Can't be transmitted
• Anyone is at risk of conceiving a
down syndrome child

4. Symptoms
• Small head
• Round eyes
• Decreased muscle tone
• Flattened nose
• Delayed mental and social
devolopment
• Poor judgment
• Slow learning
• Short attention span

6. Diagnosis/Treatment
• Detected through amniocentisis or at
birth
• No cure
• No way to prevent or change the
risks of having a child affected with
Down syndrome
• Chronic disorder
