4. The crisis
“The proposed referendum on the future of Crimea would violate
the Ukrainian constitution and violate international law. Any
discussion about the future of Ukraine must include the legitimate
government of Ukraine.” - Barack Obama
Hopefully, a possible solution to the crisis in Ukraine must be based on sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. A possible way to avoid an escalation of this crisis is to support the idea of negotiation something of a return to how it was before. This means that Russian troops would leave, and left we have some kind of an economic package who is consisting of Russia, EU, U.S and Ukraine. They should also have some kind of a protection for the Russian speakers in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. The OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) has an attempt to reduce tensions in Crimea. OSCE aims to be an important mediation actor to monitor the safety of the Russian population in Ukraine. Ukraine is regarded like a valued partner for NATO, and in these hard times, NATO stands by Ukraine.
Hopefully, Russia will stop the military escalation in Crimea. We also hope Russia withdraw its forces back to their bases and to stay away from other interference in Ukraine. In fact, Ukraine is not a member of NATO. This means the NATO alliance is under no obligation to come to the aid of Ukraine. Hopefully, the leaders of the Western would like to do something for Ukraine. But they should know that any economic or military engagement would give negative effects for all the different parties. Now, it is really important to maintain peace and security. The importance of keeping stability is very big, and they should also continue the dialogue they have with the west. This is not only for Russian interest, but they have to find a solution that benefits all actors.
