From LAST 2016:
Retrospectives are the most important ceremony for agile teams. However running the same format every time can lead to them becoming dull and can have an impact on the outputs they generate.
In this session I'll share with you some unique themes and ideas that you can try with your teams to bring some heart, soul and life back to your retrospectives.
4. What & Why
“Agile Retrospectives are special
meetings where a team steps back,
examines the way they work and
identifies ways they can improve.”
– Esther Derby

8. How did it work and what did we learn?
• Set the scene and ask
people to draw or add to
the picture.
• Explain how the format
will work.
• Discuss from scorpion to
swinging through trees.
• People get involved early in
retro.
• Good ice breaker.
• Changing the format changes
the conversation.

9. Cricket themed retrospective
• What did we hit for 6?
• What bowled us out?
• What do we need to
go to the third umpire
for?
• Start by dividing the
board in two with a
cricket pitch in the
middle.
• Get people to add to
the picture.

Valentines Day
• What do you love and
what don’t you love.
Christmas Tree
• Team decorate the tree
and share only good
things.
11. Futurespective
• Flip the conversation – where are we today and where do we want to go.
• Great identifying themes and ideas for a roadmap.
• Tip – give plenty of notice before the session to allow people to bring
ideas.

16. Be comfortable being uncomfortable.
• Retros are about all improvement so it’s a safe
place to be bold and experiment with new
ideas.
• Get people involved and change the
conversation.
• Make it more than just a team meeting.
• Have fun.

Intro
How many people either facilitate or regularly attend / contribute to retrospectives?
How many people are attending LAST conference for the first time?
Two years ago I attended LAST for the first time. It’s a great conference (one of my favorites).
That day I attended a talk from Ryan McKergow called Retrospectives Strike Back. This talk and Ryan inspired me to experiment with different retrospective techniques and some of them I’ll share with you today.
Does everybody here know what a retrospective is? (show me your hands)
Esther Debry quote
If your starting out I highly recommend reading this book.
Who runs this format?
What you’ll experience overtime is that this format get stale for a team, the conversation is usually the same, the actions can be the same and things just become boring…
Today I have 4 different themes that I’ve used with some of the teams I work with that I want to share, plus a couple of tips and techniques to bring life back to your retrospectives.
