(ROMANESQUE STYLE, DATED FROM 1179)
Rebuilt in the 18th century, its Romanesque
doorway dates from 1179. The Rococo altarpiece
above the high altar is dated 1746. The chapel of St
Mark has an altarpiece by João de Ruão from 1540.
The 18th-century pictorial tile panels were made
locally.
3. OLD CATHEDRAL
(S EC O N D H ALF O F 12TH C EN TURY)
Old Cathedral (Sé Velha)
This church is Romanesque style, dates from
the 2nd half of the 12th century and was
consecrated in 1184.
Designed by the French master Robert, its
exterior is sturdy and symmetrical, with narrow
window-slits and crenellated roof.
4. The main doorway shows
Islamic influence, while the side
door, known as the ‘Porta
Especiosa’ (Beautiful Door),
has elegant Renaissance
decoration.
Inside, there is a triforium
gallery above the side aisles.
5. The Old Cathedral high altar retable,
Gothic in style, dates from 1498 and is the
work of the Flemish sculptors Olivier de
Gand and Jean d'Ypres. The Mannerist-style
altarpiece in the Holy Sacrament chapel
dates from 1566. The Gothic cloisters, with
their naturalistic capitals, were begun in
1218.
