1. 1. Miguel velasco espinosa Jesús fdez. Del moral Gº Rafael garcía martín Siena Cathedral 2ºB
 2. 2. Introduction

The cathedral itself was originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from an octagonal base with supporting columns.

 3. 3. Early history In 1196 the construction of a new cathedral began. The transport of black and white marble was probably for the construction of the façade and the bell tower. The vaults and the transept were constructed in 1259-1260. In 1259 Manuello di Ranieri and his son Parri carved some wooden choir stalls, which were replaced about 100 years later and have now disappeared.
 4. 4. FAÇADE & exterior

The façade of this cathedral was built in two stages. It is built in Tuscan Gothic style by Giovanni Pisano, replete with gargoyles.

Between 1270 and 1285, the nave of the church had been raised and a higher façade became necessary. Work on the façade continued for another fifteen years and was then stopped. Meanwhile in 1288, the rose window, a large circular stained-glass window, was installed in the choir.

 5. 5.

The columns between the portals are richly decorated with allegorical figures and biblical scenes. The pinnacles of the upper part don’t continue over the columns flanking the central portal. The weight of the elegant side towers was reduced by adding windows.

Siena

 7. 7. Interior

The vaulted roof is decorated in blue with golden stars, replacing frescoes on the ceiling.

The marble high altar of the

presbytery was built in 1532.

Behind the main altar is a very

large painting called

Assumption of the Virgin,

painted in 1594.

 8. 8. Details of the interior :

- Stained glass windows:

The stained glass round window in the choir was made in 1288. It is one of the earliest remaining examples of Italian stained glass.

- Candelabras:

Against the pillars of the presbytery there are eight candelabras in the form of angels, and there are also some frescoes painted, representing Saints and Paradise.

 10. 11. Pulpit

The pulpit, made of marble, was sculpted between 1265 and 1268. This pulpit expresses the northen Gothic style. This

pulpit is even more

ambitious and is

considered a

masterpiece. The

whole message of the

pulpit is concerned

with the doctrine of Salvation and the Last Judgment.
