South Africa is the 25th largest country in the world
by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is
the world's 25th most populous nation.
Indigenous Africans in South Africa are descendants of Khoikhoi and Banatu immigrants
from further north in Africa, who first entered what are now the confines of the country
roughly 2000 years ago. Whit South African are descendants of later European settlers,
mainly from the Netherlands and Britain. The coloreds are descended at least in part from
all of these groups, as well as from slaves from Madagascar, East Africa and the then East
Indies. There are many South Africans of Indian and Chinese origin, descendants of
laborers who arrived in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
• The Rand, code: ZAR is the currency of South Africa.
The rand has the symbol "R" and is subdivided into
100cents, symbol "c".
• The Rand currency is also used in the following
countries: Swaziland, Lesotho, and Namibia.
The major faiths practiced in South Africa are
Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, traditional
African religions and Judaism. European and
other foreign settlers brought most of these
religions. Traditional African religion is very
popular and arrived here with our North and
West African ancestors.
