Synopsis
Globally, the dairy industry is one of the most dynamic segments of the allied-agri sector. Although
world trade relating to dairy products remains skewed on account of strong protectionist policies,
the industry has been experiencing steady growth over the last couple of years. On the back of a
surge in overall prices and strong import demand, the global dairy industry registered substantial
growth in 2013.
The dairy sector is the third largest food sector in Japan and is forecast to register the fifth highest
growth rate in 2017. In 2013, fluid milk production was estimated to drop marginally from 2012
levels, due to an extremely hot summer and a rise in the number of cases of mastitis, especially in
Hokkaido. Fluid milk production for the year stood at 7,540 (‘000 metric tonnes).
The dairy industry in Japan is dominated by the production of liquid milk. In 2013, the value share of
this segment accounted for 51.8 percent of the market. It is also the strongest category in the dairy
sector with a volume share of 46.6 percent. The liquid milk segment is forecast to register a growth
rate of 5 percent in value terms and 4.2 percent in volume terms in 2017.
Awareness about the health benefits of yogurt, along with aggressive marketing strategies, such as
television campaigns, has triggered the growth of yogurt and sour milk products in Japan. The non-
functional yogurt market was also driven by consumers who eat yogurt not only for health benefits
but also enjoy it as a dessert.
Persistent market demand is expected to stimulate the growth of the Japanese cheese market in
2014. However, high global market prices for cheese and Japan’s consumption tax hike could
hamper prospective import growth. The yogurt market in Japan is expected to generate high growth
rate and could be the key component of the country’s dairy sector in the future.
