Editor's Notes
Front Cover My front cover follows the some of the main conventions of other hip hop magazines, for example the their are often many different cover lines around the main model. However in my magazine cover, it goes against the convention to have only one model on the main page, as I decided to have my models be a girl group, instead of a solo artist seen on other Hip Hop magazines, because I thought that it would be different and make my magazine stand out more.
MY Table of Contents My TOC follows the conventions of other magazines because it has editorial pillars, page numbers and images. For my magazine I decided to keep the colour scheme of purple, white and black the same to maintain consistency throughout the magazine.
This is a TOC taken from the R&B magazine VIBE, as you can see the main image covers the whole page and is also in black and white, which matches (Click board) the Front cover, this will help keep the magazine constant because throughout this issue of the magazine the colour schemes is kept the same. Also the Front covers font is Sans Serif which is also featured on the contents page which makes it stand out and bold. However there is also decorative font used for the headings of the editorial pillars.
My Double Page SpreadMy DPS meets the conventions of other magazines because I have used pull quotes and i have a page number at the bottom. Also from doing the questionnaire I was able to see that most people wanted to see articles, so like interviews, which is why I have decided to use interviews as my main body text on my double page spread.
My magazine’s target audience is aimed at young people mainly teenagers, for the age of 13 years old and up. My magazine will be unlikely to attract the high upper class, as the use of colloquial language that is more suited to the younger generation. The image that I have used is of a newcomer girl group, I decided to have them outside and using the common theme of them standing near a fence, to keep the magazine consistent. Also I did this for the use of colour, the main colours that are used are purple, white and black, I wanted colours that would stand out on the shelf.
I thought about various types of magazine publications that I thought my magazine will fall into. The first being IPC media, they have magazines such as Nuts, NME, and many types of TV guides such as TV times and What's on TV. I thought that perhaps i should consider having my magazine here because my magazine wouldn't be the only type of music magazine, also NME is a different genre of music compared to mine and so I would not have indirect competition.
I also considered using Bauer Media as they have many different types of magazines of all sots of different categories, they also have a number of different music magazines that are from different genres such as Q, Kerrang and Mojo. It also seems to be for people who are older than the target group that I'm trying to attract and for this reason my magazine may not be suitable for this type of publication. Comapred to the ICP Media Publication, the bauer media have many different genres of magazines, for different ages and targeted at diffeent genres such as Womens, which includes magazines such as Grazia and heat Mens entertainment and examples imcludeKerrang. and Q. There are also genres like Gardening, Golf and even Pets. So this publication offere a wide range of different magazines.
I think that the most suitable publication that my magazine should use is the Bauer Media Publication as there are many different types of magazines that they produce and if I were to use Bauer it means that my magazine will be the only one of the Hip Hop and R&B genre but it would not be the only music magazine.
As already mentioned I have designed and created my music magazine to attract the younger generation, most likely to be teenagers from the age of 13 years old to possibly 17 years old. The reason for this is that my magazine would not attract adults as the language is more suited to teenagers.
By conducting market research with the use of a questionnaire, I was able to distribute my questionnaire to different people within the target group that I expected my magazine to attract. The questionnaire consisted of many different types of questions for example “what type of font to use for the main heading” or “what colour schemes do you like?”. By conducting the questionnaire it meant I was able to identify what the target audience was looking for, meaning I could use the information and implement the ideas from the research into my magazine, which would help attract my target audience. It also has an interview on my DPS which is what will also attract my target audience.
I have mainly learnt how to use Adobe Photoshop – cloning tool, using the grid to align the text, selecting and copying the image, cropping the image and resizing (holding down the shift key will make sure that the image does not get pixelated or blurred. Adding layers in order to edit, for example using different text layers to write different words and have the chance to move them around. Gaussian blur- used to make the image slightly blurry and then using the rubber tool to rub out the blur for the feature of the models in the image, making them seem to have clear airbrushed looking skin.
Blogger, to upload the different drafts that I had of my front cover, DPS and TOC. I found it really easy to use the Blogger website because it was set out to be straight forward. It was also useful for me to use blogger as I was able to see all the posts that i made along the way and it gave me a chance to edit the posts that I have made.
I also learnt how to use Slide share, which is an online website that allowed me to upload the power points that I had of my work so that I could embed it onto my blogger page.
I also learnt how to use the Issuu website which i found to really good because it allows me to use publisher to put all my publications on to it like a mock of how my complete magazine will look. And then i used Issuu to upload the publisher document and it creates for me the finished publication and it makes it look like an interactive magazine, because you can turn the pagesPublisher- for mckups and annotations Excel- for the questionnaire results to be shown in pie charts
From looking back at my preliminary task and comparing it to the music magazine that i have completed recently, I can honestly say that I have learnt much more for example I learnt how to blur the background of my music magazine so that the image stands out more instead of having a plain coloured background. Also for my preliminary task, I went against the majority of normal magazine conventions for example my mast head was going up the side instead along the top , and the cover lines were not aligned to the left third rule. I also found that i had more freedom to make my music magazine how I wanted to look , whereas the preliminary task I had to stick to a brief and i found more difficult to to try an create it whilst sticking to the brief. Overall from the skills that already had form doing the preliminary task I found it much easier to put together my music magazine, and I also learnt new things form doing the music magazine that I wasn't quite sure about.
