Slides for Session 8 "Yearning to Be Filled"

  1. 1. Great Cloudof Witnesses Session 8
  2. 2. Moody’s Dramatic Moment Winter 1871-72“My heart was not in the work of begging. I could notappeal [for donations]. I was crying all the time thatGod would fill me with His Spirit. Well, one day, in thecity of New York—oh, what a day!—I cannot describeit, I seldom refer to it; it is almost too sacred anexperience to name…. I can only say that God revealedHimself to me, and I had such an experience of Hislove that I had to ask Him to stay His hand. “I went to preaching again. The sermons were notdifferent; I did not present any new truths, and yethundreds were converted. I would not now be placedback where I was before that blessed experience if youshould give me all the world.”
  3. 3. D. L.Moody(in lateryears)
  4. 4. D. L. Moodyat NewYork’sHippodrome(1876)
  5. 5. D. L. Moody“God has got a good many children who have justbarely got life, but no power for service…. The HolyGhost coming upon them with power is distinct andseparate from conversion. If the Scripture doesn’tteach it, I am ready to correct it.… I believe weshould accomplish more in one week than weshould in years if we had only this fresh baptism…. “A great many think because they have beenfilled once, they are going to be full for all timeafter; but O, my friends, we are leaky vessels, andhave to be kept right under the fountain all the timein order to keep full…. Let us keep near Him.”
  6. 6. At a British YMCA“At length a delegation of young men from theYMCA of Sunderland waited upon the evangelists attheir lodgings, and one of them [Robert Boyd] tellsthe story of their reception in the following fashion: ‘ … On the following Sunday night, when I got tothe rooms of the Young Men’s ChristianAssociation, I found the meeting on fire. The youngmen were speaking with tongues, prophesying. What on earth did it all mean? Only that Moody hadbeen addressing them that afternoon.’”
  7. 7. Agricultural Hall, London
  8. 8. One of Moody’s Last Sermons“I believe Pentecost was but a specimenday. I think the church has made thiswoeful mistake that Pentecost was amiracle not to be repeated.”
  9. 9. Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834 – 1892)
  10. 10. Spurgeon in London’s Crystal Palace
  11. 11. “Ships Without Wind”“Without the Spirit of God we can donothing. We are as ships without wind orchariots without steeds. Like brancheswithout sap, we are withered. Like coalswithout fire, we are useless.” —Charles Spurgeon
  12. 12. “Take the Sacred Tide”“True prayer is ‘praying in the Holy Ghost’ (Jude1:20). The Spirit makes an atmosphere around everyliving prayer; within that circle, prayer lives andprevails; outside of it, prayer is a dead formality.”“Put out to sea in holy enterprise when the heavenlywind is with you. Take the sacred tide at its flood.Meetings should be increased when you feel the Spiritof God is blessing them. The truth should be pressedhome more earnestly than ever when the Lord isopening ears and hearts to accept it. You will soonknow when there is dew about; prize the graciousvisitation.”
  13. 13. A. J.Gordon(1836 –1895)
  14. 14. Samuel Chadwick (1860 – 1932)“The work of God is not by might ofmen or by the power of men but byhis Spirit. It is by him the truthconvicts and converts, sanctifiesand saves. The philosophies of menfail, but the Word of God in thedemonstration of the Spirit prevails. Our wants are many, and our faultsinnumerable, but they are allcomprehended in our lack of theHoly Ghost. We want nothing butthe fire.”
  15. 15. JohnMacNeil(1854 –1896)
  16. 16. John MacNeil“Let us get back to Pentecostal methods. The trouble is that the churches have losttheir way to that ‘upper room.’ Let a churchonly find her way back there and obtain herPentecost; let pulpit and pew be baptizedwith the Holy Ghost and with fire, and thepeople will come running in to see theburning.”
  17. 17. R. A. Torrey (1856 – 1928) “The baptism with the Holy Spirit is a definite experience of which one may and ought to know whether he has received it or not.” (Here he cites Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4; 8:15-16; 19:2.)
