There are two sides to every town, especially one which is divided by a river. These artistic images capture what's been left following the decline of Littlehampton's boat building industry.

  • 2. IMAGES OUT OF THE ORDINARYABOUT THE WEST BANKTHE RIVER ARUN DIVIDES LITTLEHAMPTON. ON THE EAST BANK YOU’LL FIND ATTRACTIVE RIVERSIDEHOUSING, RESTAURANTS, THE RNLI LIFEBOAT STATION AND A PUBLIC SLIPWAY WHERE PLEASURE CRAFTJOIN THE FEW REMAINING FISHING BOATS ON THE RIVER. HOWEVER, IT’S A DIFFERENT STORY ON THE OTHERSIDE. HERE A FEW DILAPIDATED SHEDS ARE THE LAST REMAINING EVIDENCE OF A ONCE PROSPEROUS BOATBUILDING INDUSTRY (MORE THAN 100 LIFEBOATS WERE BUILT HERE). TODAY, MUCH OF THE WEST BANK IS ALAND THAT TIME FORGOT: OLD MOORINGS FILLED WITH THE CARCASSES OF HALF SUNKEN SHIPS, DERELICTBOATS AND - WHEN THE TIDE’S OUT - MUD COVERED DETRITUS. IT WON’T STAY THIS WAY FOR LONG, AS ANAMBITIOUS WATERSIDE DEVELOPMENT IS DESTINED TO REPLACE THE 19TH CENTURY WHARVES. IT MAY NOTBE PRETTY, BUT IT DOES HAVE A CERTAIN VISUAL APPEAL. THESE IMAGES AIM TO CAPTURE THE WEST BANKAS IT IS TODAY BEFORE IT GETS CONSIGNED TO HISTORY.ALSO TAKE A LOOK AT THESE OTHER IMAGE COLLECTIONS ON SLIDESHAREIMAGES OF LITTLEHAMPTON; THE SCANDAL OF THE BENCH; IMAGES OF LITTLEHAMPTON’S LONGESTBENCH; IMAGES OF EAST BEACH CAFÉ; IMAGES OF LITTLEHAMPTON CAR CRASH; IMAGES OFLITTLEHAMPTON LOBSTER FISHING; IMAGES OF LITTLEHAMPTON BONFIRE NIGHT; IMAGES OF CLIMPINGINTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NOTICETHE IMAGES CONTAINED IN THIS PRESENTATION WERE CREATED BY GARY MARLOWE AND, WHILST BEINGAVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ON SLIDESHARE, THEY REMAIN THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF GARY MARLOWE.© GARY MARLOWE | 2009 - 2011 gary marlowe
