2. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
• Task 2.1: Evaluation of material
– 82 populations and 18 individuals have been
evaluated for peach (e.g. resistance to powdery
mildew and green peach aphid, tolerance to
brown rot, fruit characteristics)
– 4 populations and some individuals have been
evaluated for apple (e.g. resistance to fire blight,
powdery mildew, scab, fruit size)
– individuals have been chosen for crosses
3. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
• Task 2.2: conventional pre-breeding
– 28 crosses resulting in 1,331 seedlings were
performed for peach to introduce and/or combine
resistances, especially tolerance to Monilinia, together
with fruit characteristics.
– 11 crosses resulting in around 1,500 seeds were
performed for apple to introduce Rvi11 and Rvi12 into
low chilling and high quality varieties and to pyramid
and/or combine scab and powdery mildew resistance
genes
– seeds were stratified and sown out (peach and apple)
– seedlings just inoculated with scab (apple)
4. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
• Task 2.2: some of the crosses performed

5. State of progress of the ongoing tasks
• Task 2.3: fast breeding
– application of the system
• fire blight resistance QTL from Evereste and Mr5 was introduced in to the fast
breeding system
• genetic drag was determined for progeny with Evereste (seedlings with 17% of
Evereste genome)
• MAS was applied for progeny of Mr5 (FbR3, Pl1, Er2)
– improvement of the system
• 5 lines carrying the early flowering gene were propagated
• transformations with the early flowering gene under control of 35S are
initiated (other cultivars than Pinova)
• construct with early flowering gene under control of an inducible promoter
was created – Gmhsp17.5-E (HSP)
• transformations with Gala, Pinova and Mariri Red were done (regenerants for
Pinova and Gala were obtained)
• vector was constructed for silencing the MdTFL1 gene (flowering gene
repressor) under the control of HSP
6. Milestones and Deliverables status
• D2.1 (M23): Detailed description of available genetic material
(wild relatives, cultivars or advanced selections, progenies)
carrying the chosen traits and useful for breeding.
– cultivars, selections and progenies were phenotyped for
traits of interest
– marker data available for selected progeny, individuals
• M2.1 (M23): Parents and selected crosses.
– first parents were chosen for crosses, crosses were
performed
7. Expected delays and problems
• Problem corrective action (list here the
problems identified and the potential delays
identified, as well as the corrective actions
planned)
• too less seeds in some progenies new
crosses in 2012 (peach and apple)
• PhD left at JKI, more input from existing staff
8. Tasks to be done during the Annual
Meeting
• Task 2.1:
– determining descriptors for detailed description of available plant material
– availability, need and use of markers/screening methods for description of plant material (e.g.
Rvi11, brown rot, powdery mildew)
– way of proceeding with Task 2.1
– input of descriptions in database WP 7?
• Task 2.2:
– possibilities to accelerate breeding cycles in apple and peach conventionally and attempts for
comparison
– availability, need and use of markers/screening methods for description of plant material (e.g.
Rvi11, brown rot, powdery mildew)
– way of proceeding with Task 2.2
• way of further selection? - whole genome selection, growth traits, use of SNP-chip to determine
quality seedlings
• further crosses?
– demands of the stakeholders regarding traits of interest – “exotic traits”
– closer cooperation – access to material (building of pools, determining breeding value)
• Task 2.3:
– need, utility and application of the transgenic fast breeding system (interest of stakeholders)
