What the Trend looks like?
• We are living in one of the most exciting &
challenging times of all human history
• Entrepreneurship is growing very rapidly:
  women, young, retired, unemployed, …
• We have innovators, visionaries, social
  entrepreneurs, internet entrepreneurs, info-
  preneurs, mom-preneurs
• It has never been easier to start a business
before than it is today thanks to PESTEL
• Leadership is key to build a solid business
and move your biz to the next level

                www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
The Facts!

• 99.9% of enterprises in the UK are SMEs
• 4.8 millions businesses in the UK in 2008
• 3.5 millions businesses are solo proprietors
  (no employees)
• In London 630,000 businesses are solo

bigger one if you wish so?

Entrepreneurial Leadership
• « Your most important job as an
entrepreneurial leader is not to find new
opportunities or to identify the critical
  competitive insights.
• Your task is to create an organization that
does these things for you as a matter of
  course.
• You will have succeeded when everyone in
the organization takes it for granted that
business success is about a continual search
for new opportunities and a continual letting
go of less productive activities. »
By Rita Gunther McGrath, Ian MacMillan, The Most Important Job: Entrepreneurial Leadership
                               www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
Stage 1 : The beginnings

• Most business go through this stage
  regardless their activities
• Entrepreneurs dislike bureaucracy
and politics of past employed life
• Want to keep things simple
• Enterprise & Entrepreneur = one &
  only entity
• Problem: lack of time, skills, energy
• End up isolated and give up!
              www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
Stage 2 : Evolve or Not?

• Consider lifestyle & vision Go or No go?
• If you have a big vision you cannot do it alone!
• You need to learn the rules of the game :
learning to become a great Leader
• Need to become or hire a competent Manager
=> 2 separate roles now
• Manager role: Managing & taking decisions
  needed for the smooth running
• Founder role: Controlling what has been done
• Bringing new people in a biz can be risky and
  uneasy
• But can be done when you know what you want

                 www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
3 key characteristics of the
    Entrepreneurial Leader

1. Perfect knowledge of your market
   (know all the details)
2. Clear & precise Representation of
what the next stage looks like
3. Know how to communicate your
vision in a compelling way to others
              www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
Case study: Steinberg grocery stores

• Steinberg, grocery stores founded in 1917 by Sam Steinberg.
• Successful until 1933 when one store was loosing $125/week
• Sam actions
Friday: close the door, transformed the shop into a self-
service, changed the name from “Steinberg’s Service Store”
into “Wholesale Groceteria”, 15-20 % reduction, printed
     flyers & distributed them
Monday: open the door of the new store.
• Huge success then transformed other stores into self-
     services too.
• In 1960 self service shops was booming but Sam Steinberg
was far ahead of the competition.
                        www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
Critical Factors of Success for
        Steinberg and Lessons
1. Intimate knowledge of his market
2. Clear representation of the Vision
and careful execution of the vision
3. He knew how to communicate it

• He will retransmit this knowledge to
     his staff.
• The staff was learning continuously
that was the key of their success.
• He saw the problem as opportunity

From Entrepreneur to Manager
     Conservative View of the Manager
                          (Fayol)

• 5 basic functions: technical, commercial,
    financial, operations and administration
• But most of the time administration is
neglected => People find it boring (admin
    work…pile of paper, bureaucracy, …..)
• The MBA (Master of Business
Administration) invented to solve this issue
but did it meet the expectation?
• 5 tasks to consider for administration:
    Planning – Organisation – Commandment –
    Coordination – Control
                 www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
From Founder to Manager
    Modern View of the Manager
                  (Mintzberg)

3 main activities of a Manager:
1. Decision: That is the first key skill
      they spend their time deciding
what to do and what to leave
2. Contact: represent company,
   leader for staff (motivate, guide,
   role model)
3. Information: scan info & observing
   careful, propagate info internally &
   externally
              www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
The 2 keys to become an
     excellent Manager
1. Power: ability to force others to do things
   (stick & carrot)

2. Authority: ability to make people do
   things voluntarily (people accept this
person as competent thus submit )

                www.nucleusofchange.com/nec
From Manager to Leader

Greater way of having power is to have
     influence

Influence = Ability to change the attitude,
     behaviour and habits of someone

      it’s dynamic = leadership
• authentic leadership (upcoming book)
