A couple of months ago, I was asked to present my vision about User Experience as Creative Manager of the UX-Center in Unit4.
Usually when I'm asked to do a presentation about User Experience (UX), I tell about building blocks, processes, UX implementation, and the outcome, with lots of eye-candy screens.
I could have presented the same thing again, but to be honest... that's not really what UX is all about.
So I wanted to tell a real story, why UX matters for users, customers, partners and above all, for yourselve as employee of an organiation and as individual. And therefore I had to be honest..
So here it is.
The true story about UX.
My UX story.
And hopefully from now on, also your UX story.

I was graphical designer in a
full service internet agency.
WWF was one of my main
customers.
I designed a website for
children and WWF.
Based on the good results, I
was invited to the opening of

I ironed my shirt and
polished my shoes.
I was ready for this
grand opening.
And then, during this
festival, all of a
sudden, I couldn’t walk
anymore.
Partly paralyzed.
What the hell??
12. After a month of hospital tests and scans, the doctors diagnosed me with Multiple Sclerose.
It flipped my world upside down

I spent 2 months at home, trying
to recover. Step by step I could
walk again.
Frustrating…
Then I worked one year my ass
off to get back to work full time.
Stressful…
Finally I was back on track but
was only allowed to do simple
tasks.
Disappointing…

One night I realized…
Life is so unpredictable.
How should I live, now I
understand that work and leisure
are not so self-evident?

I did some math
Until we retire, we will spend 37,5% of our life on working,
including holidays and weekends, and daily 8 hours of sleep.

Focus on
‘doing things that I love to do’:
• Explore the world and learn
• Design beautiful things
• Make art
Help, guide, and mentor
others so they know why
they need to do ‘the things
they love’ too.
Forever persevere.
No excuses.

We should let our users enjoy our software
It’s all about identification with an interface
If our users can identify themselves with software, unconsious, they will think:
• The software is more reliable and useful
• The software is more intelligent and knowledgeable
• They did a better job
• They had more fun
• This applies for everybody
• Completely automatic (that’s just how our brain works)

How to identify with
Unit4 software?
27. In business for people.Page 27 Proprietary and Confidential
What should we do?
1. Everything that frustrates or upsets a user
should be automated, adjusted or deleted.
Behave like a ‘man behind the screens’.
2. Support our users to do the things they love,
that makes them happy, where they’re good at.
Behave as a reliable, professional, and
friendly colleague
3. Educate and teach to make them even better
in the things they love to do
Behaves like a mentor, coach, teacher
