YouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload and share videos. Users can create playlists of videos on specific themes for educational or research purposes. To set up an account, users go to the YouTube website and create an account with a simple registration process. Account settings allow users to manage their uploaded videos, favorites, and curated playlists. Basic functions for watching videos include searching, selecting a video, and using playback controls. Users can also like or favorite videos, add videos to playlists, embed videos on other sites, and get help from YouTube support pages.

Setting Up an Account
Go to: http://www.youtube.com/
and select ‘Create Account’.
Follow the simple step-by-step in-
structions, and remember that you
can edit your settings once the ac-
count has been created.

Select the drop-down arrow next to your user
name, and see options including ‘My Chan-
nel’, which contains your uploaded videos,
‘favourites’, and collections you’ve curated.

2. Watching a YouTube Video
 Use the search function to
find a video.
 To select a video that you
like, click on the image.
Use the controls below to watch the video (these may
change slightly in appearance, but essentially remain the
same):

To save a video to watch for
later, or to recommend to
others watching your video
stream, look below the vid-
eo.
“Like” a video to add to the
‘crowd’ who approve of the video.

3. Curate a Collection of Videos
Again, below the video, click on ‘Add To’. You can just add
to ‘Favorites’, or you can create a Playlist (for a particular
set of videos on a topic).
Playlists are helpful in creating sets of videos that you re-
quire students to watch before a taught session. List by
theme, or by week. See the YouTube ‘Help’ pages for more

Embedding YouTube Videos
The ‘Share’ option gives you a
URL or the ‘Embed Code’ to
share the video with others.
The flag is an option to ‘flag as
inappropriate’. The final button
will bring up an automatically
generated transcript.
