CHILDREN AND MUSIC: BENEFITS OF MUSIC IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT Oct 10, 2018 | News Medical Children’s Group Singing and music play an important role in our culture. You’ll find music present in many aspects of our lives: theater, television, movies, worship, holidays, celebrations, and government and military ceremonies. At home, music can become part of our family culture – a natural part of our everyday experiences. From birth, parents instinctively use music to calm and soothe children, to express their love and joy, and to engage and interact. Parents can build on these natural instincts by learning how music can impact child development, improve social skills, and benefit kids of all ages. MUSIC AND THE BRAIN: THE BENEFITS OF MUSIC A 2016 study at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found that musical experiences in childhood can actually accelerate brain development, particularly in the areas of language acquisition and reading skills. According to the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation (NAMM Foundation), learning to play an instrument can improve mathematical learning and even increase SAT scores. But academic achievement isn’t the only benefit of music education and exposure. Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness: intellectual, social and emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self- expression. For children and adults, music helps strengthen memory skills. In addition to the developmental benefits of music, why is music important? Simply put, it provides us with joy. Just think about listening to a good song on the car radio with the window down on a beautiful day. That’s joy. MUSIC GAMES FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES Children of all ages express themselves through music. Playing music for infants proves that, even at an early age, children sway, bounce, or move their hands in response to music they hear. Many preschoolers make up songs and, with no self-consciousness, sing to themselves as they play. Children in elementary school learn to sing together as a group and possibly learn to play a musical instrument. Older children dance to the music of their favorite bands and use music to form friendships and share feelings. Try these activities and games with your children to experience the pleasure and learning that music brings. Infants and Music. Garner 1 Experiencing Music MUNM 1743 26 November 2012 Soundtrack of My Life: Outline Infant/Toddler  Pat-a-Cake  Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star  ABC song  Where is Thumbkin?  Starlight, Starbright Most of these songs were taught to me by my mom or my older sisters, but I also learned some at preschool. Two of these songs helped me learn the ABC’s and the differences between my fingers and thumb. Pat-a-Cake helped me to develop my coordination when I was a baby. I still remember my mom singing, “Twinkle, Twinkle” and “Starlight, Starbright” as lullabies. Elementary School  James Taylor  John Denver  Billy Joel The River of Dreams (from River of Dreams, 1993)  The Monkees  Phil Collins  Shania Twain  Backstreet Boys Larger Than Life (from Millennium, 1999) These artists/bands are the ones that I remember most from my elementary days. My mom is a music teacher, so music has always been a very important part of my life, and I’ve always been exposed to an extremely wide variety of music. During this time, I feel that a lot of the music I listened to involved music functioning as movement. I still vividly remember dancing around the house with my mom to Billy Joel or The Monkees. Middle School  Michael Jackson  The Eagles  Judy Garland The Man That Got Away (from A Star Is Born, 1954)  Elton John  Jonas Brothers  Aerosmith Rag Doll (from Permanent Vacation, 1987)  Led Zeppelin During middle school is when I feel I started to branch out and find some of my own music. Obviously I still listened to a lot of the music my parent’s did (especially Michael Jackson, Elton John, and The Eagles), but this was the time that I discovered my own love for classic rock. Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith became two of the biggest musical obsessions that I’ve had, and I still listen to the frequently. Judy Garland is one of my all-time favorite performers, and it was in middle school that I discovered the movie A Star Is Born and totally fell in love. Some of this music functioned as ritual for my family, I don’t remember a road trip where we didn’t absolutely have to listen to every Michael Jackson or Elton John CD. High School  Led Zeppelin Thank You (from Led Zeppelin II, 1969)  The Real Group  Jamie Cullum  Rajaton Butterfly (from Boundless, 2001)  Jason Mraz  Sara Bareilles  Ben Rector In high school I continued listening to most of the classic rock bands I had discovered, especially Led Zeppelin. I had been involved in choirs my entire life, but high school is when it became a huge part of my life. I was in Chorale and Jazz Choir, and Jazz really got me into acapella groups like The Real Group and Rajaton. How do both of your studies fit in? Emily post I would have to agree the the Greeks were correct in their belief in the "doctrine of ethos." Music is something that one can make deep personal connections to and each song can have different effects on different people. There are certain songs that when they are played, they take you back to a place in time where you first heard that song. Music is able to transport you back in time to memories that you may have even forgotten about otherwise. Every time I hear "A Teenager in Love" by Dion and the Belmonts, I remember driving around with my dad in his truck just listening to the radio when I was a little girl. Music can also give you a mood boost or you can play certain music to fit your mood. For example, when I want to get into the Christmas spirit while I am baking and decorating for the holidays, I will put on my favorite Christmas playlist and the second I hear "White Christmas" I am transported back to my snowy Colorado and I am finally in the Christmas mood. Music also does more than effect us emotionally, it can make you want to move and dance. If a certain song comes on, say a song that was played at my wedding, I am going to instantly want to get up and dance! And while music will not mean the same thing to everyone and it will not have the same effect on every person, for me, music is an integral part of my life and has been since I was a little girl. Elizabeth post I believe entirely in the “doctrine of ethos” because music can really affect us to our core. Personally before meetings or work I used music with a lot of beat, because it gets my amped up and ready to do my job. In times when I’m sad I find comfort in listening to slower beats which generally fall into love or sad songs for me. The aspect of dance as it relates to music I believe has the same effect, if there are specific dance steps with a song and then the song comes on you will see people flock to a dance floor. That is because they associate music with happy times and the chance to show off their moves. For me music has been an integral part of my life as I’ve dealt with some really great times and bad times. It’s interesting how our mood and soul can change just by hearing lyrics that we can totally relate to.
