Welcome from your chairman
WELCOME EVERYONE to our June meeting. Glorious June, Sunny June, the Start of
Summer? Let us hope so.
I would like to mention our News Letter, which is of a high standard, in no small part
thanks to the efforts of our members, new members included.
The copy passed on to the editor has never been better, so please continue to maintain
this as for the most part it is the only news some of our members receive.
June has in history some notable dates: The Glorious 1st of June 1794, when Lord Howe
vanquished the French fleet; who can forget that Waterloo was fought on June 18th
1815; June 19th is reputed to be the date of the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215; and
many, many more I am sure.
This will be the time when gardens start to flower and show their many qualities. On
Tuesday June 30th our Garden Visit Group is travelling to Tatton Park where the gardens
are reputed to be wonderful. Please take note of the date for the North Notts Neighbour-
hood Picnic; it is July 1st at Rufford Park, full details on our website.
We still need volunteers for the committee, particularly: a Business Secretary, owing to
the sad loss of Linda Spray; a Speaker Finder to take over from Marilyn and someone to
service the notice boards. Please consider these and if you are interested please contact
any of the committee for more information.
Holidays are in most of our thoughts; at the moment our Caravan and Motorhome group
is away in France, no doubt sampling the wine, our Holiday group is preparing for a trip to
the Lake District starting on June 22nd. I am sure many are planning holidays by them-
selves, but just remember do not put off these trips as the older we become the fewer
opportunities present themselves.
A reminder that we are proposing a new Constitution this year please take time to read
the proposed Constitution, it is available on our website and a copy is available at the
general meeting. A vote will be taken in September at the AGM to adopt it or not, it affects
all of us so please have a look at the draft.

New Treasurer
My term as treasurer comes to an end at the AGM in September and I'm
delighted that Yvonne Kennison has been co-opted onto the committee as
assistant treasurer until the AGM when she will be formally nominated.
We have been working together during the last few weeks and she is looking
forward to her new role. We all wish her well and I am confident that she will
receive the help and support from the committee and from members that I have
enjoyed over the last ten years.
She has been a member since 2013, has enjoyed the Writing for Pleasure
group and is learning to play Bridge with her husband Michael.

Recent Events
Coffee Morning
OVER 100 members attended our annual coffee morning, held once again at The Towers on
Botany Avenue. The event provided an opportunity for members to relax and chat with fellow
members and at the same time they raised £582.00 – a welcome boost to our funds.
Successful events like this don’t just happen and our thanks go to everyone concerned for their
hard work – those members who baked pies and cakes, grew and potted plants and stood and sold
tickets, and to all members who kindly donated prizes and gifts. Special thanks to the Social
Committee for organising the whole thing.
Finally, thanks to all those members who came along and made the whole event so enjoyable, and
gave so generously.

Key to Meetings details:
THE TABLE on the next four pages shows the day of the month, time and frequency using the first
two letters of the day, followed by numbers 1 - 5 to represent the week number. The final letter M (or
F, W or V) indicates that the group meets monthly, fortnightly, weekly or at variable intervals. So
'Tu2, 2.30 - V M' would mean a group meeting on the 2nd Tuesday at 2.30pm Monthly but with
Variable finish times.
The main Mansfield and District U3Ameetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (exceptAugust
and December) at the Oakham Suite, 155 Nottingham Road, Mansfield from 10 am - 12.30 pm.
All members are invited to contact the relevant Group Leader if they would like to participate in any
interest group or attend an event. NB: * indicates a waiting list.

Book Table Report
SALE OF BOOKS in May raised £33.45, down because the amount of time available to sell was
reduced. The majority of sales take place before the meeting starts, during the break there are lots
of things to sign up for, cheques to pay out and even coffee to queue for.
While Lilian is sorting the books, I have noticed there are quite a number of Bernard Cornwell in
stock. This is the author of the ‘Sharpe’ series of novels. Anyone who likes the Sharpe books may
be interested in the American Civil War series he wrote. All these are currently available and I think
they are excellent. Email for details.

Groups News
Visit to the National Memorial Arboretum
On May the 26th, a coach consisting of Family Historians and Antique Collectors visited the
National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, near Lichfield.
The site covers over 150 acres, and has over 300 thought provoking memorials and gardens,
dedicated to both military and civilian associations, along with tributes to individuals.
The day was fine, and after a cup of coffee, most of us visited the Millennium Chapel. Every day of
the year, a two-minute silence is observed at 11.00am, which is followed by a short introductory talk
about the Memorial Arboretum.
The whole site is enormous, so with a few exceptions, we all had a 50 minute ride on the Land
Train, which took us round most of the Arboretum, with a commentary as we passed the various
memorials. After this, we retired to the Arbour Restaurant for refreshment.
Suitably sustained, we all went on our separate ways to visit the different things that interested us.
The main, Armed Forces Memorial is built of
Portland stone, and has the carved names of
over 16,000 service men and women who
have lost their lives since the end of the
Second World War. A unique feature of this
memorial is that at 11.00am., on the 11th day
of the 11th month, a shaft of sunlight shines
through vertical slots on the inner and outer
walls and illuminates the bronze wreath in the
centre.
One of the most moving memorials is the
'Shot at Dawn' memorial. This remembers
over 300 soldiers who were executed in the
First World War for for 'cowardice and deser-
tion'. Most of them suffered from shell shock after enduring the awful conditions in the trenches.
One was for a 16 year old boy who had lied about his age to join the army and fight for his country!
Happily they all have been recently fully pardoned and exonerated posthumously.
The Far East Prisoner of War Memorial commemorates those who suffered in the Far East in the
Second World War. The Burma Railway Memorial is made up of 30 metres of original railway track
and sleepers.
None of us had time to see everything, but all in all we had a very thought-provoking and interesting
day.

Read A Little Aloud
THE GROUP can take one or two more members, but then there will be a waiting list. It may be that
if present members let me know in time that they are unable to attend a session, I could contact
anyone waiting to have a 'taster'. Please note that the dates are now the second Friday in the
month from 2 to 4 pm at the St Peter's Community Centre, Bellamy Road.
So far, we have read excerpts from 'My Left Foot' by Christy Brown, which led to a discussion about
disability and how people cope with it, followed by two from 'Silas Marner' by George Eliot, which
raised views about the real values in life, and the raising of children, particularly with regard to
punishment.
Our future subjects include the themes of 'Shame' (featuring a delightful poem by Roger McGough
called 'What did your Father do?'), 'The Trouble with Pleasures', 'Desire' and various wide-ranging
others.
Each week we look at a different topic. No preparation, no homework – it's a doddle! I would love to
see other groups spring from out of these sessions!

Art
SPRINGTIME was the suggested topic for our May meeting that was well attended and appeared
to show a change to our aim. It could have been called ‘Paint and Chat’. We had the usual mix of
members, some finishing off previous subjects, doing their own thing or following the suggested
subject. There was some exchange of ideas and alternative methods of doing things as well as
trying different brushes.
Suggested Subject for 17th June: Botanical drawing. (Michael brought along some of his botanical
work as illustration.)
Gordon Howlett (01623 627423, g.howlett@ntlworld.com)
Digital World
HIGHLIGHTS of our May meetings were discussions about the recent update to the Flickr photo-
sharing and archiving system used for Mansfield U3A's on-line photo albums. The highlight is a free
automatic uploaded that ensures that no photographs will ever be lost again.
Meetings are at the far end of the bar at the Foxglove in Forest Town, opposite ASDA, on any 2nd
or 4th Friday (2.00 - 4.00). They are free and refreshments are available from the bar so just come
along and ask or show us whatever you want. But do please bring your camera and some photos
on a memory card, stick or CD.

First Aid
DON'T FORGET the first trial session of this new group has been arranged for Wednesday July
15th at Stanton Hill Baptist Church, Albert Street, Stanton Hill, NG17 3GF, from 2.00 to 4.00pm with
the support of British Red Cross who provide free training for specific groups and the 'elderly'.
The U3A Committee has agreed to fund payment to cover the cost of the venue. The training is not
standardised as it is customised by the trainer to meet the fears and concerns of those who attend,
be it broken limbs, fainting or fits.
Please support this as it may be you who needs help one day!

Holidays
SOME OF YOU are aware that I have decided to give someone younger a chance to organise holi-
days in Britain from now on. I am prepared to carry on for a couple of years arranging holidays
abroad unless the new coordinator feels ready to take over holidays both at home and abroad. It is
important to know that whoever this may be does not have to do it my way. Nevertheless I'm willing
to give the benefit of my experience over the past nine years if needed.
The new Group leader will need to start planning no later than July this year for summer 2016 other-
wise it could be difficult to find accommodation in the chosen area. I look forward to someone
coming forward soon to take my place.
MALLORCA – 26TH SEPTEMBER - 3RD OCTOBER 2016
At the time of writing this I am still waiting for quotes but I am not surprised considering there was
much for them to take into account. (Before making contact with them I had to work out a date to
suit flight times & decide on the airline and its airport. I have asked them to find a suitable hotel to
suit our age group on the east coast, to find excursions that are to be included with admission costs
& fit them sensibly into the week. The cost of a coach for transfer from Mansfield to the airport will
also have to be included.)
Anyway I'm looking forward seeing what they have to offer though it may be a case of going with
'the devil you know'. Many thanks to Janet Harford (Sherwood U3A) who has lent me material so
that I could familiarise myself with the island & what it has to offer for tourists.

Luncheon Club
OUR MAY lunch was organised by Mike Allen
at Oakmere Park Golf Club, which laid-on a
classic carvery menu.
Next, on June 18th, Clive and Sandy Joll will
be introducing us to the refurbished White
Lion at Selston, where options in their
upstairs dining room will include rump steak,
gammon 'n chips and a chocolate brownie.
Cost: from just £9 for 2 courses.
July has usually been a quiet month for the
Luncheon Club as many members go away
so I thought it would be a good time to try the
revamped Waggon at Halam as their dining
room wouldn't be big enough most months.
But how wrong can I be: this sold-out in the first week and the waiting list is now fully-subscribed
too. Sorry if you missed-out but first-come for bookings is the only way everyone can be treated
equally and all lunches are announced on the website as soon as bookings open.
Remember, vegetarian dishes are always offered and all other dietary needs can be accommodated
too if you ask when booking.
Details are on the website; please pre-book at the Luncheon Club table or by email.

OUR SPEAKER today is Barbara Meyer, a wildlife photographer and author who works closely with
wildlife conservation groups. She has travelled extensively including South Africa photographing

There will be some stunning images of all the big cats.

  • 2. Welcome from your chairman WELCOME EVERYONE to our June meeting. Glorious June, Sunny June, the Start of Summer? Let us hope so. I would like to mention our News Letter, which is of a high standard, in no small part thanks to the efforts of our members, new members included. The copy passed on to the editor has never been better, so please continue to maintain this as for the most part it is the only news some of our members receive. June has in history some notable dates: The Glorious 1st of June 1794, when Lord Howe vanquished the French fleet; who can forget that Waterloo was fought on June 18th 1815; June 19th is reputed to be the date of the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215; and many, many more I am sure. This will be the time when gardens start to flower and show their many qualities. On Tuesday June 30th our Garden Visit Group is travelling to Tatton Park where the gardens are reputed to be wonderful. Please take note of the date for the North Notts Neighbour- hood Picnic; it is July 1st at Rufford Park, full details on our website. We still need volunteers for the committee, particularly: a Business Secretary, owing to the sad loss of Linda Spray; a Speaker Finder to take over from Marilyn and someone to service the notice boards. Please consider these and if you are interested please contact any of the committee for more information. Holidays are in most of our thoughts; at the moment our Caravan and Motorhome group is away in France, no doubt sampling the wine, our Holiday group is preparing for a trip to the Lake District starting on June 22nd. I am sure many are planning holidays by them- selves, but just remember do not put off these trips as the older we become the fewer opportunities present themselves. A reminder that we are proposing a new Constitution this year please take time to read the proposed Constitution, it is available on our website and a copy is available at the general meeting. A vote will be taken in September at the AGM to adopt it or not, it affects all of us so please have a look at the draft. • 4. Online Payment For those members who use internet banking, why not pay your subscriptions ONLINE this year? Details below: Sort Code: 60-14-03. Account number: 40396835. Account name: Mansfield and District U3A. Reference: Member’s surname. (For identification – this is most important.) Thank you. Pauline Boucher, Treasurer (pauline12boucher@yahoo.co.uk, 01623 644798) New Treasurer My term as treasurer comes to an end at the AGM in September and I'm delighted that Yvonne Kennison has been co-opted onto the committee as assistant treasurer until the AGM when she will be formally nominated. We have been working together during the last few weeks and she is looking forward to her new role. We all wish her well and I am confident that she will receive the help and support from the committee and from members that I have enjoyed over the last ten years. She has been a member since 2013, has enjoyed the Writing for Pleasure group and is learning to play Bridge with her husband Michael. Pauline Boucher (pauline12boucher@yahoo.co.uk, 01623 644798) ______________________________________________________________________________ Recent Events Coffee Morning OVER 100 members attended our annual coffee morning, held once again at The Towers on Botany Avenue. The event provided an opportunity for members to relax and chat with fellow members and at the same time they raised £582.00 – a welcome boost to our funds. Successful events like this don’t just happen and our thanks go to everyone concerned for their hard work – those members who baked pies and cakes, grew and potted plants and stood and sold tickets, and to all members who kindly donated prizes and gifts. Special thanks to the Social Committee for organising the whole thing. Finally, thanks to all those members who came along and made the whole event so enjoyable, and gave so generously. Pauline Boucher (pauline12boucher@yahoo.co.uk, 01623 644798) Photos on the website ... ______________________________________________________________________________ Key to Meetings details: THE TABLE on the next four pages shows the day of the month, time and frequency using the first two letters of the day, followed by numbers 1 - 5 to represent the week number. The final letter M (or F, W or V) indicates that the group meets monthly, fortnightly, weekly or at variable intervals. So 'Tu2, 2.30 - V M' would mean a group meeting on the 2nd Tuesday at 2.30pm Monthly but with Variable finish times. The main Mansfield and District U3Ameetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (exceptAugust and December) at the Oakham Suite, 155 Nottingham Road, Mansfield from 10 am - 12.30 pm. All members are invited to contact the relevant Group Leader if they would like to participate in any interest group or attend an event. NB: * indicates a waiting list. Page 4 of 12

  • 9. While Lilian is sorting the books, I have noticed there are quite a number of Bernard Cornwell in stock. This is the author of the ‘Sharpe’ series of novels. Anyone who likes the Sharpe books may be interested in the American Civil War series he wrote. All these are currently available and I think they are excellent. Email for details. Terry Whitehead (01623 626991, 2015@whiteheaduk.plus.com) ______________________________________________________________________________ Groups News Visit to the National Memorial Arboretum On May the 26th, a coach consisting of Family Historians and Antique Collectors visited the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, near Lichfield. The site covers over 150 acres, and has over 300 thought provoking memorials and gardens, dedicated to both military and civilian associations, along with tributes to individuals. The day was fine, and after a cup of coffee, most of us visited the Millennium Chapel. Every day of the year, a two-minute silence is observed at 11.00am, which is followed by a short introductory talk about the Memorial Arboretum. The whole site is enormous, so with a few exceptions, we all had a 50 minute ride on the Land Train, which took us round most of the Arboretum, with a commentary as we passed the various memorials. After this, we retired to the Arbour Restaurant for refreshment. Suitably sustained, we all went on our separate ways to visit the different things that interested us. The main, Armed Forces Memorial is built of Portland stone, and has the carved names of over 16,000 service men and women who have lost their lives since the end of the Second World War. A unique feature of this memorial is that at 11.00am., on the 11th day of the 11th month, a shaft of sunlight shines through vertical slots on the inner and outer walls and illuminates the bronze wreath in the centre. One of the most moving memorials is the 'Shot at Dawn' memorial. This remembers over 300 soldiers who were executed in the First World War for for 'cowardice and deser- tion'. Most of them suffered from shell shock after enduring the awful conditions in the trenches. One was for a 16 year old boy who had lied about his age to join the army and fight for his country! Happily they all have been recently fully pardoned and exonerated posthumously. The Far East Prisoner of War Memorial commemorates those who suffered in the Far East in the Second World War. The Burma Railway Memorial is made up of 30 metres of original railway track and sleepers. None of us had time to see everything, but all in all we had a very thought-provoking and interesting day. • 10. Read A Little Aloud THE GROUP can take one or two more members, but then there will be a waiting list. It may be that if present members let me know in time that they are unable to attend a session, I could contact anyone waiting to have a 'taster'. Please note that the dates are now the second Friday in the month from 2 to 4 pm at the St Peter's Community Centre, Bellamy Road. So far, we have read excerpts from 'My Left Foot' by Christy Brown, which led to a discussion about disability and how people cope with it, followed by two from 'Silas Marner' by George Eliot, which raised views about the real values in life, and the raising of children, particularly with regard to punishment. Our future subjects include the themes of 'Shame' (featuring a delightful poem by Roger McGough called 'What did your Father do?'), 'The Trouble with Pleasures', 'Desire' and various wide-ranging others. Each week we look at a different topic. No preparation, no homework – it's a doddle! I would love to see other groups spring from out of these sessions! Sheila Haslam (01623 627764, sheilahaslam@ntlworld.com) Art SPRINGTIME was the suggested topic for our May meeting that was well attended and appeared to show a change to our aim. It could have been called ‘Paint and Chat’. We had the usual mix of members, some finishing off previous subjects, doing their own thing or following the suggested subject. There was some exchange of ideas and alternative methods of doing things as well as trying different brushes. Suggested Subject for 17th June: Botanical drawing. (Michael brought along some of his botanical work as illustration.) Gordon Howlett (01623 627423, g.howlett@ntlworld.com) Digital World HIGHLIGHTS of our May meetings were discussions about the recent update to the Flickr photo- sharing and archiving system used for Mansfield U3A's on-line photo albums. The highlight is a free automatic uploaded that ensures that no photographs will ever be lost again. Meetings are at the far end of the bar at the Foxglove in Forest Town, opposite ASDA, on any 2nd or 4th Friday (2.00 - 4.00). They are free and refreshments are available from the bar so just come along and ask or show us whatever you want. But do please bring your camera and some photos on a memory card, stick or CD. David Ling (01623 822994, dlpruk@aol.com) First Aid DON'T FORGET the first trial session of this new group has been arranged for Wednesday July 15th at Stanton Hill Baptist Church, Albert Street, Stanton Hill, NG17 3GF, from 2.00 to 4.00pm with the support of British Red Cross who provide free training for specific groups and the 'elderly'. The U3A Committee has agreed to fund payment to cover the cost of the venue. The training is not standardised as it is customised by the trainer to meet the fears and concerns of those who attend, be it broken limbs, fainting or fits. Please support this as it may be you who needs help one day! Linda Leivers (01623 471963, lkleivers@hotmail.co.uk) Page 10 of 12
  • 11. Holidays SOME OF YOU are aware that I have decided to give someone younger a chance to organise holi- days in Britain from now on. I am prepared to carry on for a couple of years arranging holidays abroad unless the new coordinator feels ready to take over holidays both at home and abroad. It is important to know that whoever this may be does not have to do it my way. Nevertheless I'm willing to give the benefit of my experience over the past nine years if needed. The new Group leader will need to start planning no later than July this year for summer 2016 other- wise it could be difficult to find accommodation in the chosen area. I look forward to someone coming forward soon to take my place. MALLORCA – 26TH SEPTEMBER - 3RD OCTOBER 2016 At the time of writing this I am still waiting for quotes but I am not surprised considering there was much for them to take into account. (Before making contact with them I had to work out a date to suit flight times & decide on the airline and its airport. I have asked them to find a suitable hotel to suit our age group on the east coast, to find excursions that are to be included with admission costs & fit them sensibly into the week. The cost of a coach for transfer from Mansfield to the airport will also have to be included.) Anyway I'm looking forward seeing what they have to offer though it may be a case of going with 'the devil you know'. Many thanks to Janet Harford (Sherwood U3A) who has lent me material so that I could familiarise myself with the island & what it has to offer for tourists. Margaret Burlinson (01623 632538, marburl@lineone.net) Popular Music Appreciation PLEASE note subs are due to at the June meeting as I have to pay for the room then. Thank you. Peter Haynes (01623 610886 phaynes35@hotmail.co.uk) Luncheon Club OUR MAY lunch was organised by Mike Allen at Oakmere Park Golf Club, which laid-on a classic carvery menu. Next, on June 18th, Clive and Sandy Joll will be introducing us to the refurbished White Lion at Selston, where options in their upstairs dining room will include rump steak, gammon 'n chips and a chocolate brownie. Cost: from just £9 for 2 courses. July has usually been a quiet month for the Luncheon Club as many members go away so I thought it would be a good time to try the revamped Waggon at Halam as their dining room wouldn't be big enough most months. But how wrong can I be: this sold-out in the first week and the waiting list is now fully-subscribed too. Sorry if you missed-out but first-come for bookings is the only way everyone can be treated equally and all lunches are announced on the website as soon as bookings open. Remember, vegetarian dishes are always offered and all other dietary needs can be accommodated too if you ask when booking. Details are on the website; please pre-book at the Luncheon Club table or by email. David Ling (01623 822994, dlpruk@aol.com) Photos on the website ... Page 11 of 12
