Benefits of arts after high school
1. ARTS
BENEFITS OF ARTS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
Teens develop a myriad of skills thanks to art classes. Examples include:
Howto focus and concentrate. Art projects require a certain amount of concentration to
complete. Whether the project involves watercolors or paper, there are steps to follow. Each step
requires teens to pay attention to what they are doing.
Attention to detail. Drawing skills especially can help teens see the smallest facets of something
that they might not have otherwise. This type of attention to detail can spread to other subject
areas and future work opportunities.
Improved hand eye coordination. Art projects involve hand eye coordination. Continually
doing these types of projects, such as over the span of a semester, can lead to improved abilities.
Creativity. While it might seem slight, art classes boost a teen's creativity and ability to think
outside of the box. In addition to helping with other projects for school, this skill is of top interest
to those in the job market.
The ability to follow through. In addition to time and some grasp on the actual skill itself, art
teaches the ability to follow something through to completion and to handle errors or problems as
they arise. This lifelong skill can assist in just about every life area.
Problem solving skills. When something goes wrong with an art project, it must be handled in
such a way as to not harm the rest of the project. These types of isolated problem solving skills
are essential in the development of a teen's motor functions.
Social skills. Often, art projects involve working with others, whether it just be the teacher or the
person sitting next to you. Social skills in a focused environment cannot be gained in other
academic disciplines as easily.

4. HEALTH
Types of Narcotic Drugs
Opioids
An opioid is a natural or synthetic morphine-like product extracted from the poppy plant, according to
Holland and Adams. This type of narcotic can be found in schedule II and III of the DEA's classifications.
Opioids can stop the awareness of pain, per the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This class of drug has
an increased potential for abuse because it can be obtained legally, says Holland and Adams. Pain
medications are the highest abused type of prescription medication, according to the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services. Opioid drugs include propoxyphene, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine,
methadone, hydromorphone, morphine, fentanyl, buprenorphine butorphanol, heroin and meperidine.
Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids narcotics, such as marijuana and hashish, are schedule I drugs, according to the DEA,and
come from hemp plants named Cannabis sativa. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
reported a marijuana use statistic of 15.2 million people aged 12 or older in 2008. The active ingredient
tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in cannabinoids works on the pleasure center in the brain as well as the part
that controls memory, coordination and perception.
Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens, also called psychedelics, can produce a dream-like state of consciousness, says Holland
and Adams. These drugs have no medicinal use and are purely for recreationaluse, which is why they are
on the DEA's schedule I list, under the highest abuse potential. Hallucinogens effects vary based on the
user's mood, each disclosing different symptoms with each use, says Holland and Adams. Users often
times report delusions, paranoia and hallucinations. Hallucinogens are known to cause adverse effects,
such as flashbacks, long after the drug wears off, according to Holland and Adams.
Stimulants
Stimulants are known to increase activity in the centralnervous system by affecting neurons in the brain,
says Holland and Adams. High doses of stimulants used short-term give the user the effects of
exhilaration and euphoria. Long-term use of these medications can cause restlessness, anxiety and rage.
Stimulants also elevate blood pressure and breathing rate.
Medical Uses of Narcotics
There are two ways to define "narcotics": the medical way and the US government way.
The medical definition is drugs derived from the opium poppy. "Narco" is from the Greek for sleep.
5. These drugs put you to sleep. There are severaldrugs made from the poppy that are used and abused, but
in your body all are metabolized to the same active compound, and so effectively they are all the same
drug. These drugs include opium, morphine, and heroin.
Medically, they can be used as analgesics, to deaden pain, and anesthetics, to make patients unconscious
for surgery. There are also at least a few synthetic versions which used to be used medically. Two I
remember are fentanyl and sufentanyl (probably googlable). I don't know if they are still used, but they
were also used as analgesics and anesthetics.
The US government, in it's quest to control drug abuse, has adopted a non-medical definition of narcotics.
The government includes drugs which are not derived from the opium poppy under the same legal
classification, and it is common for law enforcement personnel and politicians to refer to "narcotics" that
are not narcotic-type drugs. The government, for example, considers cocaine, a stimulant, and sometimes
marijuana, a hallucinogen, as narcotics. These drugs also have medical uses, i.e. cocaine is used to numb
the nose and mouth for minor surgery, buy I will guess that your teacher is asking specifically about
opioid drugs. If I am wrong, I bet that the Wikipedia entries for those drugs go into these aspects as well.
Drugs in this category range from legal to illegal substances, which is why stimulant drugs range from
class III to I, according to the DEA. Prescription stimulants, such as dextroamphetamines, amphetamine,
methylphenidate (Ritalin) and dextroamphetamine (Dexadrine) can be obtained legally. Illicit substances
include Ecstasy, cocaine and methamphetamine, also referred to as crank. The U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services reported that less than 1 percent of Americans in 2008 abused stimulants.
Narcotics Effects
Narcotics arewidely abused drugs that maybe prescribed by doctors or other healthcareprofessionalsfor the
treatment of mild, moderate to severe pain. Some types of narcotics such as heroin or opiumare not medically
used and are therefore 100% illegal whileothers can be legal if they are legitimately prescribed and possessed by
the individual to whom the drug is prescribed. The effects that narcotics haveon the body and the brain differ
from sedation and sleepiness to nausea and vomiting.
Physical Effects of Narcotics
Physically, the user will feel some or all of the following effects when under the influence of narcotics:
Euphoria
Sedation
Sleepiness
Nausea
Vomiting
Constipation
Constricted pupils
Reduced pain
Inability to feel pain or an extreme reduction in the sense of pain
Labored breathing
Reduced heart rate
6. These effects may become worsened if there is a risk of overdose. Narcotics overdose can lead to
complications include coma, brain damage and death. If you suspect that someone has overdosed on
narcotics, seek immediate medical attention to prevent possible long term, life threatening side effects.
Psychological Effects of Narcotics
Psychologically, the user will feel calm and relaxed while under the influence of narcotics such as
painkillers or heroin. These effects are strong at first but with sustained use, the effects can become
minimalized and may even dissipate as tolerance to the drugs build.
The most common psychological effects of narcotics include:
Reduced anxiety
Reduced tension
Happiness
Unfortunately, all of these “positive” effects of narcotics do not last. When a user develops a tolerance to
the drugs, the effects are lessened and ultimately reduced to almost what feels like nothing. That is,
unless more and more of the drugs are used. This tolerance can lead to physical dependence and
addiction to narcotics that is difficult to treat.
Long Term Effects of Narcotic Use
Healthcare professionals have determined that there are a number of long term effects associated with
sustained narcotic use. Those who use these drugs either as prescribed or for recreational purposes are at
risk of developing a tolerance which requires increased use of the drug in order to produce similar
effects. In additional to the tolerance, there is also a risk of physical dependence and addiction.
Users who become physically or psychologically addicted to narcotics are likely to go through great
lengths to get the drugs that they want in order to reduce their risk of feeling the symptoms of
withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms are the body’s reaction to being physically dependent on a drug to
produce certain chemical changes such as the shutting down of or development of endorphins and other
chemical compositions within the body which cause pain reduction, happiness and other mood
influencers.
Physically, the long term user of certain painkillers or heroin is at risk of contracting STDs or other
diseases as a result of sharing dirty needles. There is also a risk of permanent damage to the internal
organs which can lead to renal failure and potentially even death if left untreated. In many cases, the long
term effects of narcotics are so severe that even medical care and no longer using the drugs is simply not
enough to reverse the negative complications that have occurred.
Additional Effects of Narcotics
Euphoric state that leads to hallucinationsor psychosis
Restlessness and restless legsyndrome atnight
Lack of appetite and upset stomach
Dry mouth and dehydration
Pain suppression for a whilefollowed by increased pain and lack of toleranceto pain
Pinpointpupils

Slowed movement and lack of coordination
Brain disorders or brain damage
Collapsed veins and needle marks on the skin
