2. Raster Graphics
Raster Graphics are made up of bitmaps which
are small dots (pixels). Each pixel records the
colour of that particular piece of information
that makes the image.
Images that use raster graphics lose image
quality and become pixelated due to
compression.
3. Vector Graphics
• Vector graphics are made up of vectors also
known as strokes or paths
• Vectors have start and end points with curves,
angles and points in-between them.
• Images that use vector graphics can be scaled
up and down due to no compression loss.
5. JPEG
Stands For: Joined Photographic Experts
Group
Used For/Example Digital photography, Used on internet
social sites.
Advantage Small file size so can fit a lot more of them
in a smaller space for example on websites
such as Facebook
Disadvantage Loses quality every time the image is
edited due to compression and re
compression each time the image is
edited.
6. TIFF
Stands For: Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example Desktop publishing and Graphic Designers
also popular among photographers.
Advantage TIFF files have the option to not lose
quality through compression.
Disadvantage The main disadvantages of TIFF files are
the file size of which is much bigger than
the JPEG format. Most TIFF files will not be
able to be sent be email due to large file
size.
7. GIF
Stands For: Graphics Interchange Format
Used For/Example Often used on the internet for short digital
animations, often used among designers
or engineers for product illustration.
Advantage Can be used to display a series of images
one after the other to create the
appearance of a video, which is an
advantage to people who want to
annotate using moving images.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of the GIF file format is
that it is hard to keep the file size small so
that it can be transferred over the
internet. Also sound cannot be included
with the image.
8. BMP
Stands For: Bitmap Image File
Used For/Example The simple design of bitmap image files
make it useful as a general purpose format
in Microsoft windows.
Advantage Bitmap image files are supported for many
other non-windows applications and
programs.
Disadvantage Generally trouble enlarging BMPs without
loss of quality and pixilation. BMPs also
have a large file size which can lead to
issues with storage space etc.
10. PSD
Stands For: Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Manipulating Images, Images for magazine
front covers
Advantage Allows the user to manipulate the image
to a desired look through the use of
various complex tools, also saves different
image layers the user has created
Disadvantage Not many other programs aside from
Photoshop will open or read the files,
Photoshop files can become very large
which will cause storage issues.
11. AI
Stands For: Adobe Illustrator Art
Used For/Example Can be used for the creation of company
logos
Advantage The image can be scaled up and down
without and loss in quality as the images
are vector based
Disadvantage My be some compatibility issues with
newer versions of the software.
12. FLA
Stands For: Flash File
Used For/Example Flash files are used to create animations
and games
Advantage Flash files work equally as well on different
operating systems i.e. linux and Mac OS.
They can make excellent quality files
without a large file size.
Disadvantage Sites with lots of flash animation may load
slowly due to having to load the files. Flash
files are hard to update.
13. WMF
Stands For: Windows Metafile
Used For/Example WMFs are used to create logos i.e. for a
company.
Advantage Can be scaled up and down without loss in
image quality.
Support vector and raster components.
Disadvantage Bitmapped metafiles will suffer the
resizing issues of bitmap images e.g.
pixelation.
15. Compression
Definition The minimization of the file size of an
image to make files easier to transfer and
store.
Advantage Reducing the file size allows for more
efficient storage space on internal and
external hard drives or memory sticks.
Disadvantage Each time an image is compressed it loses
definition and quality and will become
pixelated.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Used for converting physical images such
as a physical photo, written articles and
sketches into a digital form.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A digital camera is used for taking pictures
and storing them on the actual device,
which can later be transferred onto a
computer.
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A device that can be used to draw on the actual
screen with through the use of a pen like object,
various types of software contained on the
tablet can be used to enhance these images.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? Optimization may be used to make sure
images are easily viewable on the
internet.
How can you optimise? Images can be optimized by using
Photoshop.
Advantage to optimising Optimizing allows for smaller file sizes of
which is useful on the web as websites
without optimized images will take longer
to load due to large image file sizes.
Disadvantage to optimising Websites that have been optimized for
mobile phone use may not show images
this is to increase the loading time of the
site
