Come April 25th, if you’re living in London and feel an ominous rumble and things start to fall off your
shelves, don’t assume that an earthquake has hit the capital or that the previous rioting has once
again begun. Instead, that’ll be hard-core mob Stone the Roses, who’ll be rounding off their
European tour in the centre of the city in support of their album The Days Following.
The bands frontman Adam Cunlifferevealed to CRANKED! that not only have they been touring, but
when they are off stage they have been working on their forthcoming album, as yet untitled, which
will be a vast departure on all of their previous albums. Even their debut. We caught up with the
band in the studio and had an exclusive playback of three of their new songs during the mixing
process. We also took the time to find out why they are undertaking such a mammoth task and
whether they are coping with doing two enjoyable but hectic things, in the space of one…
Why are you recording and touring at the same time?
ADAM: “We like working hard! I’m loving every second of it. Usually the thing we hate when we’re
touring is the fact we have to come off stage. We could honestly stay up there for hours but now,
there isn’t a point where we are sat about waiting for the next show. We have something else to
focus on, it’s great”
How are you’s not exhausted from taking on this much?
RYAN: “You’d think we would be wouldn’t you? It has been hectic sometimes, leaving the studio and
hurrying to the venue to prepare for the night. We’re all working together to make it work. And it is
working. It’s a real kick knowing what we are the first band to do this!”
ALEX: “Our manager Tom is the one to thank for it all. Coming off stage to a kebab or a pizza goes
down a treat. He really does know how to look after us. Haha”
What are your plans for this next album?
ADAM: “It took us a while to work out what the hell we were going to do with this one! In the end
we just decided to make it fast, and make it different. For our other albums we’ve spent hours in the
studio to make them perfect, and they’ve always had an overall concept. This one doesn’t. That’s
what’s so good about it”
You’ve been on this tour for over a year now and it’s your last show next week. Do you have any
plans to do something different to round it off?
ALEX: “Totally. We’re hoping to play some of our new songs from this album were working on to give
our fans a taste of something different. It will definitely be worth the wait they’ve had anyway”
4 years ago you we’re only just bringing out your debut album. How does it feel to be one of the
most successful rock bands of the century?
BEN: “It’s such an achievement for us. We have to just thank our fans as it’s them who have brought
us here and let us do what we love. And we enjoy every moment of it. We just hope we can give
something back with the music we produce.”
ADAM: “We’ve realised that were one of the youngest bands of our size so there’s a responsibility
that comes with that, whether it’s to fans or outside listeners who aren’t fans, it’s up to us to be the
greatest rock band we can be. To be the best Stone the Roses we can be”
