1. Interview with the dropouts: Media
Firstly your year has been hectic to say the least you formed in 2010 and 2011 was just taste of what
can happen in the future, you toured England and also played Glastonbury. How did it feel to be
headlining a UK tour after just one year of the forming as a band? Jake from the dropouts said: ‘’Well
you know we were shocked about it, but we took advantage and had one of the best years ever’’
There debut album ‘Hold on’ reached number 5 in the ITunes chart and reached number 10 in the
UK official album chart. The album included songs such as not long now and the UK hit which
climbed to number 7 in the singles chart close but not close enough. Your all friends I guess? Have
you grown up together, gone to school and college together what are your relationships like with
each other? Tom (the lead singer) replied ‘’We grew up in the same village in south Wales and all
attended the same school, also I’m actually related to John (the drummer) and we actually came up
with the idea for the dropouts and it just escalated from there really’’. You have an incredible
amount of fans and support out there, how do you feel about selling out gigs and tours, it must be
different than sitting in college working? ‘’yea well it’s completely different actually ha-ha, we just
love that people actually pay for our music and also they pay to come see us live. We all love our job
and would not change it for the world!’’ A question I ask in my interviews is what inspired you to
make a band? Tom replied: ‘’Well it’s actually quite interesting my dad used to be in a band and he
had drums, guitar, keyboard and so on. I picked up drum sticks and started banging around and I
thought to myself I quite enjoy this! So I called Tom, john and jack round for a jam. We played a bit
and we all thought to ourselves let’s get learning and let’s make some good quality music, so that’s
exactly what we did. My dad heard us playing a few months later and had some connections he got
us recording and album and within weeks we were snapped up by XL, that night I do not remember
though ha-ha we partied hard!’’ Wow cool story I can imagine your dad being very proud now.
The Dropouts have come very far after 2 years of forming; they’ve just announced a European tour
and also announced Leeds/Reading 2012 and also V festival. The big question on everybody’s mind
is, are you going to release a new album!? John (the bassist) exploded with: ‘’Yes! It will be the
album of the summer, its released 1st of July so everyone who read’s this remember to go to your
local HMW and purchase it! We’ve not actually came up with a name for it yet but we will let all our
fans know’’. Must be very exciting, you’re just living the life at the moment. Where did you record
your latest album? ‘’XL records flew us all over to Miami which was such an experience especially for
john as he’s never flown before, so yea we chilled there for a few weeks got the album done. We’ve
worked so hard on the album we just want the fans to appreciate it as much as we do, we’ve kept
the same simple rifts and funky bass lines and we believe simple can be very effective as its been
shown in Hold on’’.
Finally what are your thoughts for the future and what would you like to achieve? ‘’Obviously we
would all love a number 1, but I think the goal is just to keep on going keep releasing songs and
albums. Hopefully after that selling out world tours and being at the peak of music, we can only
dream though, But we are only young and anything could happen.’’ Yea you’re right you’re only
young and you’ve got plenty of time ahead of you, well I hope you achieve everything you set out to
achieve maybe we will see you sell out tours and get to number 1 in the future. ‘’Thank you for
having us we have thoroughly enjoyed it’’
2. The only way is up for the Dropouts; they produce brilliant music and hold very good live shows.
