3. Concept of Leadership
• Managers are people who do things right, while leaders are people
who do the right thing. - Warren Bennis, Ph.D. "On Becoming a
Leader"
4. Definition of Leadership
Leadership is a complex process by which a
person influences others to accomplish a mission,
task, or objective and directs the organization in a
way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. A
person carries out this process by applying her
leadership attributes (belief, values, ethics,
character, knowledge, and skills).
Although your position as a manager, supervisor,
lead, etc. gives you the authority to accomplish
certain tasks and objectives in the organization,
this power does not make you a leader...it simply
makes you the boss. Leadership makes people
want to achieve high goals and objectives, while,
on the other hand, bosses tell people to
accomplish a task or objective
5. Principles of Leadership
To help you be, know, and do, follow these eleven
principles of leadership:
1. Know yourself and seek self-improvement.
2. Be technically proficient.
3. Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your
actions.
4. Make sound and timely decisions.
5. Know your people and look out for their well-being.
6. Keep your people informed.
7. Develop a sense of responsibility in your people.
9. Ensure that tasks are understood, supervised, and
accomplished
10. Train your people as a team.
11. Use the full capabilities of your organization.
8. The Process of Great Leadership
• The road to great leadership (common to
successful leaders):
• Challenge the process - First, find a process
that you believe needs to be improved the
most.
• Inspire a shared vision - Next, share you vision
in words that can be understood by your
followers.
• Enable others to act - Give them the tools and
methods to solve the problem.
• Model the way - When the process gets tough,
get your hands dirty. A boss tells others what
to do...a leader shows it can be done.
• Encourage the heart - Share the glory with
your followers' heart, keep the pains in your
heart.
9. Functions Of Leadership
• Leadership is considered as the most
important element of the directing
functions of management
• Clarifications of goals
• Motivation
• Team Work
• Representation
10. Case of World’s fifth largest Steel
Maker Company “Tata Sons”
• Eight months after it was set up to find a successor to
Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata, the search panel has
concluded that it cannot find a “replacement” for the
group chief.
11. • “Our committee has come to the conclusion that we cannot
find a replacement for [Ratan] Tata,” said Tata Sons Director
and committee member R.K. Krishna Kumar in an interview
published on the company's website.
• The group holding company, Tata Sons, in August, 2010 set up
the five-member panel to find a successor to Mr. Tata, who is
due to retire in December, 2012 when he turns 75.
• Apart from Mr. Kumar, other panel members are the former
Vice Chairman of the company, N.A. Soonawala; Group
Director Cyrus Mistry; Group Adviser and Lawyer Shirin
Bharucha; and British businessman Lord Bhattacharya.
12. Mr. Kumar pointed out that the
• panel might have to lower the
• benchmark to find a successor to
• head the $ 71 billion business empire.
• He said:
• “He [Tata] is a born leader and you can see this wherever he
goes...He has a place in the history of post-Independence
India,” he said adding “we may have to change and re-arrange
the model in terms of what we are looking for.
13. New Successor of Tata Sons
• Cyrus P. Mistry
• Cyrus Mistry joined the Shapoorji Pallonji
group as a director in 1991. On Wednesday, he
announced that he would legally dissociate
himself from the SP group as he assumes his
new responsibilities.
14. • “We are now considering people — from within the group and outside,
including expatriates — who can fill the role we have in mind. There are
challenges but we will soon come to a conclusion.”
• While announcing the panel last year, Tata Sons said the group would
require someone with experience and exposure to direct its growth
amidst the challenges of the global economy.
• Selection process
• “The selection process for a prospective candidate would consider
suitable persons from within the Tata companies and other professionals
in India as well as persons overseas with global experience,” it said. — PTI
