3. In the beginning of the 18th century, the
ecumenical patriarch Gabriel sent Adamant
Rysios to Smyrna, as a teacher, to educate the
youngsters of the former’s hometown.
In 1708, Following Gabriel’s instructions, Rysios
went to Smyrna and started teaching at the
“Old School” , as it was called, the first Greek
communal school in the area.
Ten years later, Rysios quit his job and Ioannis
Dendrinos was appointed in charge of the school.
When the school was in danger of shutting down
due to financial problems, three Greeks -among
whom Ioannis Denrdinos- subsidized the school.

4. In 1743 the creators of the school
dedicated the school to Jesus Christ.
After that the school was named:
-Christ’s school
-Greek school
-Evangelic school , which was afterwards
reformed and remained as “Evangeliki
Scholi”.

5. 1st period of activity 1733-1778
The first period ends with a huge fire which
turns the school into ruins.
2nd period of activity 1779-1821
Ioannis Kannas funds and reconstructs the
school in the aftermath of the fire. The school
has to stop its activity for the needs of the
Greek Revolution in 1821.
In 1810, Mahout B’ officially recognizes the
function of the school.
From 1808 until 1819 , there is friction beyond
Evangeliki and the “Filological school” (a new
school in Smyrna).
6. 3rd period of activity 1824-1842
Chief of the school is now Omirolis Avramios.
He exempts the school from its pious
character.
He adds French, Italian and English in the
school curriculum.
He introduces the quote of the school:
“TRUTH, PERFECTION, WISDOM,
JUSTICE”
He quits his position in 1834.
During his tenure the school reaches the
summit of glory.
7. 4th period of activity
1834-1860
The school is divided into two
parts:
-3 grades of Greek high
school -4 grades of
senior high school
5th period of activity
1861-1914
The school is developing and
meeting glory, until the
outburst of the first world
war.
Until then the school hosts
students from Minor Asia
and adjacent islands.
8. 6th period of activity 1914-1922
-Last period of the school
-The chief, Nikolaos Lithochoos, induces
radical changes to the curriculum and the
system of the school that prove to be
productive.
-The school thrives until 1922, when it is
burnt by the flames of the Minor Asian
Catastrophe.
9. The library and the
museum
What was really unique
about the school was the
fact that it hosted:
1. A library, that started
with the amount of 520
and reached the 72.000
books and 1200 hand-
written documents.
2. An archaeological
museum, which hosted
3.000 items of historical
value and 15.000 old
coins.
10. After the final catastrophe of the school in
Smyrna in 1922, in 1934 a new school was
established in Nea Smyrni to the memory of the
initial, given the name “Evangeliki Scholi”.
Today the school still remains in Nea Smyrni.
It is a model school.
It hosts students from Nea Smyrni, Athens and
all the suburbs of Athens.
Very often, students of our school stand out by
taking part in school competitions and not few
are the times when they succeed.
Extra activities highlighted drama club,
cine club, history club, mathematics’club etc
Today our school is acknowledged for his long
history and educational results.
